Box Score 2 OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Highlighted by a home run from freshman Molly Hoyt (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany Hills) the Stevenson softball team had their first doubleheader sweep since March 24, with a 6-3 and 9-4 victories over non-conference opponent Catholic Sunday at Weinberg-Fine Stadium.
This was the fourth doubleheader sweep this season for the Mustangs and ninth in two seasons under head coach Joey Lye.
The Mustangs (19-19) fell behind 3-0 before rallying with a five run fifth inning. With the bases loaded, Stevenson scored three runs on back-to-back errors by the Cardinals to clear the bases. After a run by sophomore Stephanie Ayres (Upper Marlboro, Md./Bishop McNamara), Stevenson loaded the bases for the second time that inning adding one more run.
Sophomore Lindsay Kuczak (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI while freshman Kaitlyn Seger (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Freshman Laura Welch (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) earned the victory going 3.0 innings before giving way to Hoyt who pitched 4.0 innings. Together they allowed only five hits and no earned runs.
In game two, the Cardinals (18-18) took a 1-0 lead on a single by Morgan Gieser in the top of the second inning. Stevenson responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning, including the first career home run by Hoyt.
With the bases loaded, freshman Brianna Dieter (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) drove in a run followed by a two RBI single by Ayres.
The Mustangs added five more runs in the fourth inning on singles from Hoyt, Kuczak, freshman Tiffany Kahl (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough) and freshman Kristen Mueller (Bel Air, Md./Harford Tech).
Hoyt went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs while Kuczak went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Ayres and Mueller both added two RBIs.
Freshman Stephanie Shupe (Lakewood, Wash./Lakes) earned to victory while sophomore Briana Pichalski (Port Reading, N.J./Woodbridge) earned her first career save.
Stevenson will play Hood in the first round of the Commonwealth Conference double elimination tournament on Friday, May 3 at Lebanon Valley. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
