No. 9 Mustangs Fall to No. 3 UC Santa Cruz in Five Sets in CVC Semifinals

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Stevenson men's volleyball junior Austin Jacoby (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) had 17 kills and junior Jon Martin (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) totaled 12 kills and 14 digs, but the ninth-ranked Mustangs fell to third-ranked UC Santa Cruz for the third time this season 17-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-22, 10-15 Saturday in the semifinals of the 2013 CVC Championship at Thiel's Beeghly Gymnasium.

Stevenson (24-12) is currently two wins shy of the school record and will await a bid to the 2013 ECAC Division III South Championship next Saturday, April 20.

Of the Mustangs' 12 losses this season, nine have come against teams ranked in the top 10 of the AVCA Division III Men's Coaches Top 15 Poll. The team is 7-11 against teams ranked in the AVCA poll, including 2-5 against the top-5 with wins over No. 2 Carthage on February 9 and No. 3 and 2013 CVC champion Juniata on March 8.

For his efforts in two games at the CVC tournament, Martin was named to the all-tournament team after totaling a team-high 25 kills along with 28 digs, four service aces and seven total blocks.

After totaling just 16 kills and a .000 hitting percentage in losing the first two sets, Stevenson had 26 kills and hit .297 over the next two to force a fifth and deciding set.

After missing the previous five games, Jacoby returned to lead the team in kills, but was limited by nine attack errors and four service errors. The Banana Slugs posted 26 total blocks and had four players with nine or more kills.

Martin had an all-around strong performance as he totaled 12 kills, three assists, four service aces 14 digs and three block assists. Freshman Patrick Schuyler (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) had eight kills and 10 digs while junior Eddy Klepper (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) had five kills, five digs and nine total blocks.

Junior Adam Thatcher (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) had 11 digs while sophomore David Moler (York, Pa./Central York) had 41 assists, 12 digs and three block assists.

The game was very competitive, featuring 24 ties and 12 lead changes throughout, including six ties and three lead changes in the final set. Stevenson led 8-7 midway through the fifth, but the Banana Slugs finished with an 8-2 run as the inaugural CVC champions advanced to the title game for the second-straight year.

Salvatore LaCavera led UC Santa Cruz (15-6) with 23 kills, six digs and four block assists while Harley Frost had 13 kills, seven digs and four block assists. Blake Chadwick totaled 52 assists, 10 digs and three block assists while Mauro Salinas added 25 digs.
