Box Score 2 OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Highlighted by a marriage proposal and 21 kills and five block assists from sophomore Kyle Wisner (York, Pa./Central York), the No. 9-ranked Stevenson men's volleyball team split a pair of games at Owings Mills Gymnasium Saturday, falling to No. 7 SUNY New Paltz in five sets before sweeping Penn State Altoona.
The Mustangs (17-9) fell to SUNY New Paltz 28-26, 16-25, 16-25, 25-23, 12-15 while beating Penn State Altoona, 25-15, 25-18, 25-20.
Prior to the game against the seventh-ranked Hawks, sophomore John Crinion (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) proposed to his girlfriend and current Johns Hopkins assistant women's volleyball coach Jenn Feldmann in front of several family and friends.
She said yes.
Following the proposal, Stevenson battled to take the first set after block assists by freshman Kyle Pottieger (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) and junior Jon Martin (Lititz, Pa./Warwick). The Mustangs finished the game with 20 block assists.
After falling behind 2-1, Stevenson forced a fifth and deciding set after edging out a two-point victory in the fourth which featured nine ties and three lead changes.
However, the Hawks (20-5) would take the game after closing the set on a 5-1 run.
Wisner led the Mustangs with 17 kills while junior Austin Jacoby (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) finished with 13. Martin finished with nine kills, 13 digs and four block assists while Pottieger added a team-high six block assists.
The Mustangs are now 7-8 against nationally-ranked teams this season, including 5-6 against teams ranked in the top-10 of the AVCA Division III Men's Coaches Top 15 Poll.
In game two, Stevenson swept the Nittany Lions (7-19) after hitting .362, the team's second-highest hitting percentage of the season. The team had balanced attack with seven different players registering at least three kills.
Crinion led the team with eight while he also added a team-high six digs. Freshman Robert Wingert (Hanover Township, Pa./Holy Redeemer) also added a team-high six digs to go along with a career-high 39 assists. Senior Rob Kryger (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) and sophomore Wesley Richardson (York, Pa./Central York) combined for 13 kills.
Stevenson wraps up its five-game homestand on Wednesday when it hosts a non-conference tri-match with No. 8 Baruch and Lancaster Bible, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
