Mark Pannenton's Overtime Goal Lifts No. 2 Mustangs Over No. 8 RIT, 12-11

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's lacrosse sophomore Mark Pannenton (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) scored his second goal of the game with just 1:49 remaining in the first overtime to lift the No. 2-ranked Mustangs to a 12-11 victory over No. 8 RIT Wednesday at Mustang Stadium.

The game was the 12th overtime contest for Stevenson (3-0) in its 19-year history and first since May 23, 2010. The team is 5-7 in those games.

The Mustangs trailed for the entire first half and for the first 10:36 of the second until Pannenton scored off an assist from junior Chris Dashiell (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) with a man-advantage to tie the game at 5-5.

Stevenson then took its first lead of the contest just 1:04 later when sophomore Billy Burgoyne (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored on a feed from junior Glen Tompkins (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) to cap a 4-0 run and put the team in front 6-5 with 3:20 remaining.

The Mustangs would stretch their lead to three at 10-7 when sophomore Michael Crowe (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) from senior Tyler Reid (Clinton, Conn./Xavier) with 6:34 to play.

However, the Tigers (0-1) would scored four of the game's next five goals over a span of 3:15 to tie the game at 11-11 on an unassisted tally by Taylor Wisman.

RIT won the face-off to start overtime before Kyle Aquin was stripped of the ball by junior Ryan Rubenstein (Sykesville, Md./Boys' Latin), but a shot by sophomore Connor Curro (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's) was blocked, giving the ball back to the Tigers.

On the ensusing RIT possession, junior Warren Pumphrey (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) forced the Tigers into a second-straight turnover before he picked up his second career point, and first since Apr. 14, 2012, assisting on Pannenton's game-winner.

After trailing 5-3 at the half, Stevenson outscored RIT 9-6 the rest of the way to improve its record to 15-1 in two seasons at Mustang Stadium. The Mustangs outshot the Tigers 54-30 and won 16-of-26 faceoffs while going 2-for-9 with the man-advantage.

Pannenton led the way with three goals while Dashiel had a goal and two assists. Crowe, Burgoyne and sophomore Matt Tompkins (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) each scored twice while Reid finished with two assists.

Aquin had four goals to lead RIT while Pat Johnston made 12 saves. Freshman Dimitri Pecunes (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) stopped 11 shots for Stevenson.

The Mustangs continue their four-game homestand on Saturday with a 7:00 p.m., contest versus No. 12 Western New England. Stevenson is 3-0 all-time against the Golden Bears and 2-0 at home, winning last year's match-up 6-4 on Mar. 3, 2012.
