Leah Warner Scores Twice in Mustangs' 19-5 Loss at No. 2 Salisbury

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. - Stevenson women's lacrosse junior Leah Warner (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) scored twice and the Mustangs trailed by just four midway through the first half, but Salisbury scored the final four goals of the half to take an 11-3 halftime lead as the No. 2-ranked Sea Gulls won 19-5 Saturday at Sea Gull Stadium.

For Stevenson (0-1), the loss was just its second in the last five season openers.

After Lauren Feusahrens gave the Sea Gulls a 1-0 lead 1:55 into the game, the Mustangs tied it just 1:18 later on the first goal of the season by junior Marissa Meiklejohn (Glen Burnie, Md./Old Mill).

Meiklejohn, a 2012 IWLCA All-Chesapeake Region Second Team selection, led Stevenson with 41 goals last season and was second with 50 points.

The Sea Gulls (1-0) would score the next three-straight to take a 4-1 lead with 23:20 remaining in the first half before Warner netted her first of the year just 37 seconds later to cut the Mustangs' deficit in half, 4-2.

Junior Mandy Marston (Baltimore, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) pulled Stevenson within 7-3 with 12:00 left in the half before Salisbury rattled off four consecutive goals to close the half with an 11-3 advantage.

Warner and sophomore Kathryn Merrick (Bel Air, Md./Forest Hill) each added second-half tallies for the Mustangs, but they were outscored 8-2 in the second half. Merrick's goal with 16:58 remaining was the first of her career after she missed all of last season due to injury.

Sophomore Leanne Bittner (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) got the start in goal for Stevenson, totaling five saves in just over 45 minutes. Freshman Maggie Lawder (Perry Hall, Md./Mercy) also saw action for the Mustangs, stopping four shots in just over 14 minutes.

Katie Bollhorst, the 2012 IWLCA Attacker of the Year, led the Sea Gulls with three goals and one assist. Kate Haker also had four points with two goals and two assists.

Salisbury held a 31-9 advantage in shots and won 17 of 25 draw controls. Stevenson was also whistled for 27 fouls, including two yellow cards.

The Mustangs return to action next Saturday, March 2 when they travel to Salem, Virginia for a non-conference contest versus Roanoke beginning at noon.
