Box Score FROSTBURG, Md. - Stevenson field hockey freshman Karen Mata (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) scored her first career goal with 5:58 remaining in the first half and it proved to be the game-winner as the Mustangs snapped a two-game losing streak with a 3-1 non-conference victory over Frostburg State Tuesday at Bobcat Stadium.
Stevenson (3-3) evened its overall record at .500 and its road record to 1-1 with a win against its former Capital Athletic Conference rival.
The Mustangs, who were outshot 24-21 and on the short end of a 13-6 margin in penalty corners, took a 2-0 lead into halftime after goals by Mata and senior Katelyn May (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding).
For May, it was her team-leading fifth goal of the season, tying her for the team lead in points as well with sophomore Allyson Moody (New Windsor, Md./Westminster) as both now have 10.
Stevenson would hold its two-goal advantage until Alli Elliott scored off an assist from Rachel Merritt to pull the Bobcats (2-5) within one with just over 21 minutes left in the second half.
However, that would be as close as Frostburg State would get as sophomore Ariella Hopp (Jarrettsville, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) who earned All-CAC Second Team honors a year ago scored off a penalty corner with less than 13 minutes remaining to provide insurance for the Mustangs.
The goal was the first of the season for Hopp and the ninth of her career.
Despite being outshot, Stevenson managed to play with the lead thanks to the play in goal of freshman Katie Cavanaugh (Parkville, Md./Perry Hall) who finished with a career-high 11 saves, including eight in the second half. Hopp and junior Alyssa Russell (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) each had one defensive save.
Maggie Edwards totaled 13 saves for Frostburg State who suffered its third-straight defeat and second at home.
Stevenson returns home to face Rowan on Thursday. Game time is 7:00 p.m., at Mustang Stadium.
