READING, Pa. - Stevenson softball senior Brittany King (Bel Air, Md./Mercy) hit the game-winning RBI double in the eighth to provide the insurance run to take game one, 2-1, while junior Sara DiMeglio (Spotswood, N.J./Spotswood) went 2-for-3 in the nightcap to complete the sweep, 5-2, at future MAC rival Albright, Thursday.
The Mustangs (19-22) won their second extra-inning game in as many days. Stevenson is 4-2 this season in extra-inning affairs, after losing four consecutive extended games dating back to 2009.
The Lions (6-21-1) were led by a strong pitching performance by Stephanie Romano who no-hit Stevenson through 4.2 innings before back-to-back two-out infield singles by sophomore Kristin Baione (Waldorf, Md./North Point) and freshman Stephanie Ayres (Upper Marlboro, Md./Bishop McNamara) ended her no-hit bid. Romano would get out of the jam by forcing senior Brittani Rynkowski (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) to lineout to shortstop.
Stevenson attempted to decide game one in regulation after Rynkowski delivered a two-out single up the middle, however, freshman Rebecca Biddle (Greensboro, Md./North Caroline) was gunned down by centerfielder Brandy Lagomarsino at the plate to end the seventh.
Freshman Briana Pichalski (Port Reading, N.J./Woodbridge) did her part by allowing no earned runs, scattering five hits and striking out seven to pick up her seventh win of the season. The only run Pichalski allowed was the international tie-breaker runner in the eighth on a wild pitch. Pichalski retired 21 of the final 25 Albright batters she faced, including four 1-2-3 innings.
In the nightcap, after spotting the Lions a 2-1 lead after two, DiMeglio drove in the game-winning RBI single to plate freshman Katie Diller (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) in the fourth inning with two outs.
Diller pitched a three-hit complete game, allowing two earned runs while striking out five and retiring 12 of the last 14 Lion batters she faced.
Stevenson concludes the 2012 season with a record of 19-22, winning seven of their final nine by a combined score of 38-17.
