Box Score GREENVILLE, Pa. - Stevenson men's volleyball freshman Wesley Richardson (York, Pa./Central York) totaled a team-high 13 kills as the Mustangs won their first game in the inaugural Continental Volleyball Conference Championship on Friday, defeating Milwaukee School of Engineering at Thiel's Beeghly Gymnasium, 28-26, 25-17, 25-23.
With the win, Stevenson (20-11) posted its second-straight 20-win season and third in the last four years. It is the first time in the program's 10-year history that the Mustangs have posted back-to-back 20-win seasons.
The first set featured 13 ties and three lead changes, the last of which came at 26-26 before Stevenson took a 1-0 lead behind a kill from sophomore Jon Martin (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and service ace from sophomore Eddy Klepper (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley).
The Mustangs had just one attack error in the opening set, finishing with 16 kills and a .628 hitting percentage.
Meanwhile, the Raiders (18-14) totaled 21 kills and a .486 hitting percentage. Max Martin totaled seven of his game-high 14 kills in the set.
Stevenson trailed 3-1 in the second set before an 8-0 run gave them a six-point advantage that they would never relinquish despite a 10-5 spurt that pulled MSOE within one at 14-13.
With the third set tied at 5-5, the Mustangs used a 13-4 run to take its largest lead of the night at nine points before holding off a late rally by the Raiders that saw them pull within one at 23-22. The Mustangs would close out the set and the game on a kill by Richardson.
Richardson committed just one error in 24 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage in posting his sixth game of the season with at least 10 kills. He has 29 kills in his last two games after totaling a career-high 16 versus D'Youville on April 5.
Sophomore Austin Jacoby (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) totaled nine kills and seven digs while freshman Kyle Wisner (York, Pa./Central York) had six kills, four digs and six total blocks. As a team, Stevenson had 19 total blocks, including four from Klepper who also added four kills.
Freshmen David Moler (York, Pa./Central York) and Patrick Devine (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) each had a team-high eight digs while Moler added 36 assists.
Brian Main added nine kills for MSOE and Jack Geary had eight. Nick Manning and John Cote each had a game-high nine digs.
Stevenson advances to the CVC semifinals on Saturday where it will meet Carthage, the top-seed from the West and the No. 1-ranked team in the nation. Game time is at 2:00 p.m.
