Box Score HARRISONBURG, Va. - Stevenson men's volleyball freshman John Crinion (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) totaled a team-high eight kills to lead four players who had at least five as the Mustangs defeated Eastern Mennonite 25-19, 25-17, 25-23 Wednesday at Yoder in the Continental Volleyball Conference opener for both teams.
The win was the fourth-straight for Stevenson (7-6, 1-0 CVC) and its second consecutive against the Royals after they had won the first 17 meetings in the series.
Crinion was one of four players who had at least five kills. Freshman Wesley Richardson (York, Pa./Central York) added seven kills while sophomore Eddy Klepper (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) had six to go along with six total blocks.
As a team, the Mustangs had 17 blocks. Crinion added four while freshman Kyle Wisner (York, Pa./Central York) had three. Wisner also had five kills.
With the first set tied at 15-15, Stevenson scored five-straight points behind the serve of freshman David Moler (York, Pa./Central York) to take a commanding 20-15 lead. The team then closed out the six-point victory with three consecutive kills from Crinion, Moler and Wisener.
The Mustangs led by as many as 10 in the second set at 19-9 and 22-12 before back-to-back attack errors by Eastern Mennonite's Chris Moise gave Stevenson a 2-0 set lead.
The third set featured 10 ties and three lead changes. With the score tied at 20-20, the Mustangs jumped in front by two, highlighted by block assists from Crinion and Wisner.
The Royals (6-6, 0-1 CVC) trailed 24-21 before a kill by John Grove and block assists by Greg Knight and Kyle Storc pulled them within one. However, Stevenson would complete the sweep on a kill by Wisner, securing the team's second-straight road win.
Moler finished with 25 assists and nine digs while freshman Patrick Devine (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) added a game-high 12 digs. Sophomore Adam Thatcher (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) had seven digs.
Moise had a game-high 13 kills for Eastern Mennonite while Grove had eight. Nolan Prock totaled 11 digs and Kendall Garber had seven kills and six digs.
Stevenson welcomes Eastern Mennonite, Juniata, Philadelphia Biblical and Thiel to Owings Mills Gymnasium this weekend for a CVC divisional tournament beginning Friday. The Mustangs face Thiel and Juniata on Saturday.
