Vis, Taggart Key Mustangs' 4-1 Win at Buffalo State, First in Program History

Box Score

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Stevenson women's ice hockey freshman Karly Vis (Murillo, Ont./Thunder Bay Queens) had a goal and an assist while freshman McKenzie Taggart (Centennial, Colo./Colorado Selects) had two assists as the Mustangs posted the first win in school history in the team's second-ever game, 4-1 over Buffalo State Saturday at the Ice Arena.

Stevenson (1-1) scored a goal in each period and never trailed while killing off nine of 10 Bengal power play attempts.

The win was also the first in the career of head coach Shera Vis who spent two seasons as an assistant coach and head junior varsity coach at Elmira from 2009-11.

A year ago, the football team posted the first win in school history in the team's second contest with a 46-43 double overtime victory over Christopher Newport at Mustang Stadium on Sept. 10, 2011.

Vis opened the scoring at the 6:45 mark of the first period when she redirected a shot from freshman Kristen Webber (West Lebanon, N.H./Kimball Union Academy). Taggart was also credited with an assist on the play.

Buffalo State (1-1) would tie the game at 1-1 with just 1:14 remaining in the opening period when Jeyna Minnick scored on the power play off an assist from Kara Goodwin.

That would be the only goal allowed by Stevenson freshman Sarah Modzelewski (Bloomington, Ind./Little Caesars) as she made 28 saves on 29 shots on goal, including 13 in the second period.

The Mustangs would tally the only goal of the second period as freshman Megan Alexander (Redondo Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) scored at 5:12. Freshmen Madison Lange (Califon, N.J./New Jersey Rockets) and freshman Rachel Martell (Sussex, Wisc./Arrowhead High School) each had assists on the play.

Freshman Brooke Webber (Washington, Pa./Pittsburgh Elite) scored at 12:40 of the third period off assists from Taggart and Vis before freshman Sydney Sakwa (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood) capped the scoring with an empty net goal at 19:13.

Sakwa and Lange also picked up assists in yesterday's game and are now tied for the team lead in points with two, joining Vis and Taggart.

Stevenson will make its home debut next Saturday, November 3 when it hosts Liberty at Reisterstown Sportsplex beginning at 5:15 p.m.
