Murray Totals Second Double Double, Mustangs Edged by St. Mary's, 61-55

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson women's basketball junior Sam Murray (Reisterstown, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) totaled her second career double double and second this season, but poor free throw shooting enabled St. Mary's (Md.) to escape with a 61-55 victory Saturday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

The Mustangs (6-11, 2-7 CAC) were just 18-of-31 from the free throw line for 58.1 percent and were 18-of-58 from the floor for 31.0 percent, including 1-for-10 from three-point range.

Murray totaled 14 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Her previous double double came earlier this season when she had a career-high 17 points and 11 rebounds in a 64-43 victory over Mary Baldwin in the EMU Tip-Off Classic on Nov. 19, 2011.

The game was tied at 33-33 at halftime before Stevenson built a five-point advantage, 41-36 with 16:11 remaining in the second half, on a jumper by senior Daniela Poss (Brookeville, Md./Good Counsel).

However, a 6-0 run, keyed by back-to-back baskets by Jasmine Jones, gave the Seahawks (7-11, 5-4 CAC) their first lead, 42-41 with 12:38 to play.

St. Mary's stretched its lead to as many as seven with 6:26 left before a 5-0 run by the Mustangs cut their deficit to two, 54-52 with 2:54 remaining.

That would be as close as Stevenson would get as it finished the game missing eight of its last nine attempts from the floor despite the Seahawks missing five of their final 10 attempts from the free throw line, including five of six in the last 46 seconds.

The Mustangs led by as many as 14 in the first half, 19-5 with 12:58 remaining, before a 15-2 run by St. Mary's pulled the team within one at 21-20 with 6:43 to play. Stevenson pushed it back to nine, 29-20 with 4:28 left, but the Seahawks tied it at 31-31 with 1:16 remaining after an 11-2 spurt.

Murray was one of three Mustangs in double figure scoring, including senior Amanda Craig (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) and freshman Kayleigh Guzek (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) who each had 10 points. Craig added five rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Poss finished with eight points and seven rebounds.

Jones totaled 16 points, four rebounds, four assists and six steals for the Seahawks who totaled 27 points off of 28 Stevenson turnovers. Bridget Wilkins had 14 points and nine rebounds.

Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday, January 25 against CAC rival Salisbury. Tip-off is at 6:00 p.m.
