Kaitlyn May Scores Lone Goals in Mustangs' in 2-1 Overtime Loss at Roanoke

Box Score

SALEM, Va. – Stevenson field hockey junior Kaitlyn May (Arnold/Archbishop Spalding) scored the game's first goal and the Mustangs led 1-0 at halftime, but Roanoke scored two unanswered goals, including the game-winner just 2:24 into overtime en route to a 2-1 victory Sunday at Donald J. Kerr Stadium.

Stevenson (2-5) ended its four-game road trip with four consecutive losses and is still looking for its first road win in 2011 after going 4-4 on the road a year ago.

Mayn scored 24 minutes into the game when she collected a rebound in front of the goal to give the Mustangs a 1-0 halftime lead.

With under 20 minutes to play, Abby Bjork tied the game for the Maroons (1-5) off a second half penalty corner that was assisted by Lee Sheldon.

Sunday marked the second-straight season that Stevenson and Roanoke needed overtime to decide a winner after the Mustangs escaped with a 3-2 victory on the road a year ago. It was also the third overtime game this season for Stevenson who is now 1-2 in those games. The Mustangs are 5-6 in overtime games since 2008.

This time, it was Roanoke's leading scorer Mariel Hunt who scored the game-winner for the Maroons, netting her team-leading fourth goal of the season on a breakaway to give her team its first win of the season.

Despite the loss, the Mustangs outshot the Maroons 20-6, including 4-2 in the extra period. They also held a 12-3 advantage in penalty corners.

Junior Kelsi Zimmerman (Odenton/Arundel) finished with four saves while Cristina Scichilone registered 14 for Roanoke, four of which came in overtime.

Stevenson opens its final season in the CAC on Wednesday, September 21 when it hosts Frostburg State at Mustang Stadium beginning at 4:00 p.m. Last season, the Mustangs defeated the Bobcats 4-0 on the road.
