Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Wilson scored two unearned runs while Nicole Musser allowed just one unearned run on four hits while striking out eight as the Phoenix handed the Stevenson softball team its first home loss since April 7 with a 2-1 victory in the first round of the ECAC Division III South Championship Wednesday at Weinberg-Fine Stadium.
The loss snapped a five-game unbeaten streak at home for the Mustangs (22-18-1) and denied them a school-record tying 23rd win of the season.
Meanwhile, Wilson (23-11) advances to this weekend's double elimination tournament where they will play Misericordia who upset top-seeded Neumann at home Wednesday, 4-2.
Since losing a doubleheader at home to Stevenson back on March 25 and starting the season 0-6, the Phoenix are 23-5.
Wilson took a 1-0 lead just three batters into the game as Brianna Smith scored unearned on a sacrifice bunt by Tracey Artz after moving to third on a throwing error by senior Desirae Sullivan (Severna Park/Severna Park).
The Phoenix scored another unearned run in the top of the fourth when Musser scored what proved to be the game-winning run on a single to center by Brandy Holtzapple after advancing to third on a throwing error by junior Kristin Urban (Timonium/Mercy).
Stevenson mounted a comeback with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, scoring an unearned run as well. After hitting a single to right center, junior Brittani Rynkowski (Hampstead/North Carroll) scored all the way from first on a single by junior Lisa Bilski (Forest Hill/Fallston) following a two-base throwing error by Wilson third baseman Erin Nickell that also moved Bilski to third.
However, the Mustangs could not get the tying run as Bilski was caught trying to steal home on a wild pitch by Musser.
After escaping further damage following a lead-off double by Smith in the top of the seventh, Stevenson had a chance to rally in the bottom of the inning, but Musser retired three of the four batters she faced, allowing just her fifth base runner of the game when sophomore Sara DiMeglio (Spotswood, N.J./Spotswood) was hit-by-pitch.
The Mustangs finished the year with their second-straight 20-win season, the first in the program's 12-year history, while making their first-ever postseason appearance.
