Roper Sets School Single-Season Wins Record in Split at McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Stevenson softball senior Julianne Roper (Baltimore/Western Tech) set a new school record for wins with her 14th of the season after pitching a complete-game, one-hit shutout at McDaniel as the Mustangs posted a 4-0 victory in game one of a doubleheader Thursday before the Green Terror rallied for a 2-0 win in game two.

The loss in game two snapped a three-game winning streak for Stevenson (18-17-1) and four-game streak on the road.

Roper was perfect through four innings, retiring the first 12 batters she faced before allowing a lead-off double to left by Jordan Beans in the bottom of the fifth. The only other baserunner for McDaniel came on a walk by Megan Elfert with one out in the seventh.

The shutout victory was the third-straight for Roper and her fourth in the last five starts. During that time, she has allowed just five runs on 19 hits over 35.1 innings while posting a 4-1 record and a 1.00 ERA with 24 strikeouts.

The win was also the 33rd of Roper's career, leaving her two shy of the school record held by Sarah Moelter '10 who set the single-season record with 13 in 2010.

The Mustangs scored two runs in the third, including one on an RBI single by senior Desirae Sullivan (Severna Park/Severna Park), before adding two on a two-run double in the seventh by senior Jessica Bandzwolek (Fallston/Fallston).

Bandzwolek was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two walks while further adding to her career doubles record which now stands at 41. Sullivan and junior Brittany Rynkowski (Hampstead/North Carroll) each went 2-for-4.

Rynkowski added two more hits in game two, finishing 2-for-3 and totaling two of Stevenson's five hits against the Green Terror's Erinne Warrenfeltz.

McDaniel (12-20) scored one of its runs in the bottom of the second on a bases loaded single by Beth Ann Fusco before Lauren Wildasin drove in Warrenfeltz with a two-out single to left in the seventh. Wildasin was 2-for-3 with one RBI while Fusco went 1-for-3 with a run driven in.

Freshman Meagan Sumwalt (Linthicum Heights/Catholic) suffered the loss inside the circle for the Mustangs after surrendering one run on four hits with three walks over 3.0 innings before giving way to Roper.

Stevenson faces its second-straight centennial conference opponent on Friday when it hosts Washington (Md.) at Weinberg-Fine Stadium. First pitch is at 3:00 p.m.
