Women's Lacrosse Picks Up First Win Over No. 17 Mary Washington, 13-10

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson women's lacrosse junior Jenny Schroeder (Severna Park/Severna Park) tied a season-high with 12 saves, including eight in the second half as the Mustangs posted their first career win over Mary Washington, handing the No. 17 Eagles a 13-10 loss Saturday at Caves Athletics Complex.

The win was the first in eight career meetings for Stevenson (7-5, 4-2 CAC) against Mary Washington and its first in five against a nationally-ranked opponent this season.

Meanwhile, it was the first loss for the Eagles (8-6, 5-2 CAC) against a non-ranked opponent this season.

Led by three goals and one assist from freshman Marissa Meiklejohn (Glen Burnie/Old Mill), the Mustangs built a 9-5 halftime lead after holding a 19-12 advantage in shots and a 10-5 margin in draw controls.

Meiklejohn finished the game with a four goals and five points, both career-highs.

Junior Laura Grammer (Parkville/Perry Hall) added two first-half goals as Stevenson scored the last three goals over the final 3:47 after the Eagles had cut the lead to just 6-5 on a goal by Erin Murphy with 8:52 remaining.

Junior Samantha Parker (New Market/Linganore) scored the first goal of the second half off an assist from senior Megan Weiss (Odenton/Arundel) to give Stevenson its largest lead of the game at five before Mary Washington scored three-straight to pull within two, 10-8 with under 15 minutes to play.

However, Meiklejohn sparked another three-goal run with her fourth of the game and 20th of the season with 6:47 to play. Freshman Leah Warner (Pasadena/Northeast) and freshman Mandy Marston (Baltimore/Institute of Notre Dame) also scored a mere 36 seconds part as the Mustangs went back in front by five with just 3:12 left.

Combined with the play of Schroeder, the three-goal stretch was instrumental as the Eagles outshot Stevenson 16-8 in the second half and held a 12-7 edge in ground balls.

The Mustangs finished the game with a 16-9 advantage in draw controls, led by five from junior Emily Gartrell (Jarretsville/North Harford) and four by senior Lisa Baker (Westminster/Westminster). Baker also added four points with two goals and two assists while Weiss finished with three points on a goal and two assists.

Allie Kimmelman led the Eagles with four points on two goals and two assists while Kelley Torrey had three points with two goals and one assist. Danni Guigli made eight saves.

Stevenson hits the road for the first time since March 20 when it travels to Frostburg State on Tuesday. Game time is at 5:00 p.m.
