Rynkowski, Roper Highlight Non-Conference Sweep at Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Va. - Stevenson softball junior Brittany Rynkowski (Hampstead/North Carroll) went 4-for-6 while senior Julianne Roper (Baltimore/Western Tech) pitched two complete-game shutouts, allowing just six hits as the Mustangs swept a non-conference doubleheader at Randolph-Macon Tuesday, winning both games by 1-0 margins.

Stevenson (17-16-1) improved its record to 10-6 in road games this season where it has won three-straight and four of the last six.

With two wins, Roper tied the school, single-season record for wins in a season with 13, equaling the mark set by former teammate Sarah Moelter '10 last year. Roper totaled her second and third shutout victories of the season to go along with nine strikeouts.

In game one, Heather Lewis allowed just one unearned run in the top of the sixth and retired the first 13 batters she faced before surrendering a one-out single to senior Jessica Bandzwolek (Fallston/Fallston). Rynkowski also had a single in the inning, but the Mustangs could not break the scoreless and tie and left both runners on base.

However, Stevenson would score the game's only run in the top of the sixth after freshman Kristen Fassler (Owings Mills/Western Tech) was hit by a pitch and advanced to third following a one-out single by freshman Lindsay Kuczak (Bel Air/C. Milton Wright) and a Randolph-Macon fielding error. Fassler then scored on a ground out to short by sophomore Sara DiMeglio (Spotswood. N.J./Spotswood).

The Mustangs held the Yellow Jackets (21-11) scoreless despite a two-out triple by Paige Smith in the first and a lead-off double from Michalann Camp in the seventh.

Randolph-Macon left six runners on base in game one and were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Rynkowski was 2-for-3 while DiMeglio had the game's only RBI. Smith was also 2-for-3 for the Yellow Jackets as she had two of the team's four hits.

The second game featured another pitcher's duel between Roper and Brandi Wilson and was scoreless until the top of the seventh. Bandzwolek led off the inning with a double to left before advancing to third on a single by Rynkowski and scoring two batters later on an RBI single to left by junior Krsitin Urban (Timonium/Dulaney).

Rynkowski and Bandzwolek each went 2-for-3 in game two with Bandzwolek scoring the game's lone run and setting a new school record with her 40th career double. Urban finished 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Morgan Greene and Lauryn Nanny had the only two hits of the game off Roper with singles in the first and sixth, respectively.

Stevenson travels to McDaniel for its second-straight, non-conference road doubleheader on Thursday. First pitch is at 3:00 p.m.
