OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Six different players had at least one goal while junior Jenny Schroeder (Severna Park/Seton Keough) had 11 saves, including one with 11 seconds remaining as the No. 20 Stevenson women's lacrosse team edged out a 7-6 victory over Dickinson Saturday at Caves Athletics Complex.
In a game that featured four ties and five lead changes, the Mustangs (3-1) took a one-goal lead on free position shot by sophomore Olivia Baker (Perry Hall/Catholic) with just over 10 minutes remaining.
From there, the Stevenson defense, which held the Red Devils scoreless for the final 26 minutes, took control as it forced three turnovers in the final 8:29 while getting two huge saves from Schroeder, the last of which came on Taryn Abbassian as Dickinson looked to force overtime.
After Dickinson tallied the first goal of the game, the Mustangs scored on four consecutive free position shots, including two back-to-back from freshman Leah Warner (Pasadena/Northeast), to give the Mustangs a 4-1 lead with 16:14 remaining in the first half.
The Red Devils (2-2) answered with four consecutive goals of their own, sparked by a free position shot from Lindsay Edgerley at 15:22 as they took a 5-4 advantage with 4:18 left.
Senior Lisa Baker (Westminster/Westminster) followed with her lone goal of the game with 2:06 to play to tie the game at 5-5 at halftime. The goal was the 120th of her career and her 197th career point, leaving her eight shy of Lauren Zegowitz's school record.
Dickinson scored its only goal of the second half only four minutes in when Linzi Burstein scored her first of the season off an assist from Kara Glazer to put the Red Devils back in front.
However, junior Emily Gartrell (Jarretsville/North Harford) scored just 1:14 later to tie the game for the fourth time at 6-6.
Long defensive stanzas for both teams consumed almost 15 minutes of the clock before Baker tallied her first career goal at 10:01 to give the Mustangs 7-6 lead they would not relinquish.
Warner finished with two goals while Gartrell, Lisa Baker, Olivia Baker, senior Megan Weiss (Odenton/Seton) and freshman Mandy Marston (Baltimore/Institute of Notre Dame) each scored once. Marston's goal with 16:14 remaining in the first half was the first of her career.
Abbassian also led the Red Devils with two goals while Glazer added two assists and Burstein had one goal and one assist. Jessie Clark had seven saves.
Stevenson hosts crosstown rival McDaniel on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m., looking to avenge last year's 8-7 road loss that snapped the team's five-game winning streak to start the season.
