FREDERICK, Md. - Stevenson softball junior Lisa Bilski (Forest Hill/Fallston) and sophomore Sara DiMeglio (Spotswood, N.J./Spotswood) each hit their first home runs of the season, but the Mustangs could not overcome seven errors, including six in game one as they dropped a CAC doubleheader at Hood Saturday, 9-5 and 5-3.
Stevenson (10-9, 0-4 CAC) surrendered four unearned runs in the first game after committing six errors. The Blazers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first after scoring two unearned runs as the result of three Mustang errors.
Stevenson tied the game with two runs in the top of the third, including one on an RBI triple by Bilski.
Hood (3-17, 2-2 CAC), who swept its first doubleheader and snapped a 13-game losing streak, quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the third on a three-run homer by Brittany Sabol that gave the team the lead for good.
The Blazers added three more runs in the fourth to increase the lead to 8-2 before Bilski hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit in half at 8-4. It was the sixth career home run for Bilski and her first since Apr. 2, 2010.
The Mustangs added their final run on an RBI ground out by DiMeglio in the seventh.
Bilski finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBIs while senior Desirae Sullivan (Severna Park/Severna Park) also went 2-for-4. DiMeglio and junior Kristin Urban (Timonium/Mercy) had the only other hits for Stevenson who was 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
Senior Julianne Roper (Baltimore/Western Tech) had her three-game winning streak snapped after allowing eight runs on eight hits.
Like game one, Hood jumped out to a quick first-inning lead in game two, scoring three runs on back-to-back doubles by Kelly Gafner and Sabol.
The Blazers' 3-0 lead would hold until the top of the fifth when Stevenson cut the advantage to one on DiMeglio's first career home run with two outs. However, Hood would push its lead back to three with two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth before an RBI double by freshman Lindsay Kuczak (Bel Air/C. Milton Wright) provided the final margin.
DiMeglio finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs while Kuczak was 2-for-4 with one RBI and Sullivan went 2-for-4. Freshman Meagan Sumwalt (Linthicum Heights/Catholic) allowed five runs on five hits to suffer her fourth loss of the season and second in the last three decisions.
Bridgette Ringley pitched both games for the Blazers, allowing seven earned runs on 13 hits while striking out seven.
Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday with a CAC doubleheader versus York (Pa.) at Weinberg-Fine Stadium. First pitch is at 3:30 p.m.
