Stevenson, Catholic Combine For Five Home Runs in Doubleheader Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson softball freshman Lindsay Kuczak (Bel Air/C. Milton Wright) hit her first career home run, a solo shot to center field in the bottom of the seventh to give the Mustangs a 5-4 walk-off victory in game one of a non-conference doubleheader with Catholic Monday at Weinberg-Fine Stadium.

Kuczak's home run was one of five on the day, four of which came from Catholic who hit two in game two en route to a 5-1 victory that snapped the Mustangs (8-7) three-game win streak.

Stevenson jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first of game one on an RBI double by junior Lisa Bilski (Forest Hill/Fallston) and back-to-back RBI singles from senior Jessica Bandzwolek (Fallston/Fallston) and sophomore Sara DiMeglio (Spotswood, N.J./Spotswood).

Tracey Scanlon homered to left center in the top of the second to get the Cardinals (8-7) on the board before a two-run homer to left center by Erin McMakin in the fourth pulled them within one, 4-3.

Scanlon then tied the game in the top of the seventh when she scored on a sacrifice bunt by Samantha Daubman.

Kuczak finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Bandzwolek and DiMegio each went 2-for-3 with one RBI. As a result, Bandzwolek extended her hitting streak to a season-high six games.

Senior Julianne Roper (Baltimore/Western Tech) picked up her sixth win of the season and second in as many starts after scattering six hits over seven innings and striking out three.

In game two, the Cardinals used two, two-run home runs from Meagan Daubman and Megan Rizzi as well as a strong pitching performance from McMakin to earn a split. Daubman gave Catholic a 3-0 lead in the top of the second with her first homer of the season before Rizzi increased the advantage to 5-0 with her third home run in the fifth.

In the circle, McMakin allowed just one earned run on four hits while striking out three as she held the Mustangs scoreless through 5.2 innings until senior Desirae Sullivan (Severna Park/Severna Park) hit an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth that scored junior Brittani Rynkowski (Hampstead/North Carroll).

Sullivan was one of four different Mustangs who had one hit each, including DiMeglio who extended her hit streak to a season-best five games. Bandzwolek had her team-high six-game streak snapped after going 0-for-2 with a walk.

Stevenson will now embark on a six-game road trip beginning Friday at Wilson. First pitch is at 3:00 p.m.
