Box Score 2 PROVIDENCE, R.I. - For the second time this season, the Stevenson men's volleyball team captured an invitational tournament title, finishing the JWU Invitational a perfect 4-0 with back-to-back 3-0 victories over NECVA Metro Division rival New Jersey City and host Johnson & Wales Saturday at the Harborside Recreation Center.
The Mustangs (23-6), who set a school record for wins in a season on Friday, further added to that mark with a 25-22, 25-18, 25-22 win over New Jersey City and a 25-12, 25-18, 25-19 victory versus Johnson & Wales. The team also improved its record to 8-0 in neutral site contests and 7-2 in road games.
In addition, freshman Kalani Soeda (Kaneohe, Hawaii/LeJardin Academy) was named most valuable player and sophomore Kyle Diller (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) was chosen to the all-tournament team.
In four games, Soeda led the team with 44 kills while posting a .398 hitting percentage, eight service aces, 19 digs and six total blocks. Diller totaled 132 assists, an average of 10.1 per set, 23 digs, seven kills and six total blocks.
Against the Gothic Knights (13-16) in the opener, Soeda totaled a career-high 18 kills with just one error in 29 attempts for an outstanding .586 hitting percentage. He also added five digs and two service aces.
Freshman Austin Jacoby (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) had eight kills, seven service aces and four digs. Diller added 38 assists and freshman Adam Thatcher (Bel Air/C. Milton Wright) totaled a team-high 10 digs.
The win against New Jersey City was the third in as many games against the Gothic Knights this season and the sixth out of the last eight since 2008.
Against the Wildcats (8-12), Soeda added six kills and a game-high 10 digs, tying him with freshman Jon Martin (Lititz, Pa./Warwick). Jacoby led the way with 11 kills while Diller had 32 assists.
Stevenson wraps up the regular season next Saturday, March 26 with a contest versus Kean at Owings Mills Gymnasium beginning at 1:00 p.m.
