Box Score 2 OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson softball team had two golden opportunities to upset No. 18-ranked and 14-time defending CAC champion Salisbury on Wednesday at Weinberg-Fine Stadium, but strong pitching and timely hitting allowed the Sea Gulls to escape with two more conference victories, 2-0 and 6-3.
The Mustangs (5-4, 0-2 CAC), who have never beaten the Sea Gulls in 22 career meetings, had their winning streak stopped at four after being held to just three runs on five hits.
However, Wednesday marked the closest two games in the series that started back in 2001, and trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth of game two, Stevenson attempted a comeback, scoring three runs against reigning CAC Pitcher of the Week Kelly Leary.
Freshman Kristin Baione (Waldorf/North Point) pulled the Mustangs within one on a two-run single to left that scored freshmen Kristen Fassler (Owings Mills/Western Tech) and Stephanie Endley (Pasadena/Seton Keough) after senior Jessica Bandzwolek (Fallston/Fallston) led off the inning with a single and scored on a Salisbury error to start the rally.
Stevenson looked poised to tie the game in the sixth with runners on first and second and one out following Bandzwolek's second hit of the game, but the Sea Gulls managed to escape without any damage after Erika Brittingham entered in relief of Leary.
Brittingham struck out one before Salisbury caught freshman Amanda Mittelstetter (Baltimore/Western Tech) trying to steal third to end the inning.
The Sea Gulls (14-4, 4-0 CAC) added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh on RBI singles by reigning CAC Player of the Week Michelle Gravdahl and Lindsay McCabe.
Bandzwolek totaled two of the Mustangs' five hits and finished 2-for-3 while Baione was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Seniors Lisa Bilski (Forest Hill/Fallston) and Desirae Sullivan (Severna Park/Severna Park) had one hit apiece.
Freshman Meagan Sumwalt (Linthicum Heights/Catholic) suffered her second loss in four starts this season while Leary managed to pick up her fifth win and Brittingham got her first save of the season.
Brittingham totaled her ninth win and third no-hitter of the season in game one, allowing just three walks while striking out 10 and walking three. Stevenson was 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and an RBI single by Carly Read in the second and Lindsay Brown in the seventh was all the Sea Gulls needed to post their seventh shutout of the season.
Senior Julianne Roper (Baltimore/Western Tech) took the loss, but allowed just one earned run over 7.0 innings while scattering eight hits.
The Mustangs host a non-conference doubleheader with Virginia Wesleyan on Friday beginning at 2:00 p.m.
