LANCASTER, Pa. - Led by the freshmen duo of Austin Jacoby (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) and Jon Martin (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), the Stevenson men's volleyball team rebounded from Wednesday's loss at Eastern Mennonite with a pair of victories over Wentworth and Lancaster Bible Saturday at Lancaster Bible's Horst Athletic Center.
The Mustangs (9-1) opened with a five-set victory over Wentworth 17-25, 25-23, 17-25, 25-23, 18-16 before downing NECVA Metro Division rival Lancaster Bible for the second time this season, 25-19, 25-17, 25-18.
Against Wentworth, Jacoby totaled his second double double this season with 21 kills and 14 digs. It also marked his second game with at last 20 kills. Meanwhile, Martin also posted his second double double, all in the last three games, with 15 kills and 14 digs.
The first four sets were identical with the Leopards (7-5) winning the first and third and Stevenson taking the second and fourth, all by the same scores. Wentworth totaled 29 kills and a .299 hitting percentage in the first and third sets while the Mustangs had 25 kills and a .215 percentage in the second and fourth.
The fifth set featured seven ties and three lead changes until Stevenson managed to pull out its ninth five-set win out of the last 14 despite a .147 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Kyle Diller (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) added a career-high 48 assists, 10 digs and three total blocks while freshman Eddy Klepper (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) had a career-high eight kills and five total blocks.
Against Lancaster Bible (0-9), Jacoby added 14 kills and six digs while Martin had 10 kills and six digs as the two combined for 24 of the team's 39 kills.
Diller had 24 assists, freshman Adam Thatcher (Bel Air/C. Milton Wright) had 10 and sophomore Trevor Reddell (Street/John Carroll) had a season-high nine digs, one short of his career-high.
Stevenson returns to action Sunday when it hosts Thiel at Owings Mills Gymnasium beginning at 11:00 a.m. The Tomcats split two matches at Lancaster Bible Saturday, sweeping the host Chargers before falling to Wentworth, 3-1.
