Box Score ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - Stevenson women's lacrosse senior Megan Weiss (Odenton/Seton), the team's leading goal scorer from a year ago, netted three on Saturday, including the game-winner with just six seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Mustangs to an 8-7 CAC road victory over St. Mary's (Md.) in the season opener for both teams.
The win was the first in 14 career meetings for Stevenson (1-0, 1-0 CAC) who held the Seahawks to their lowest goal total in the series. It was also the third-straight win for the Mustangs in a season opener, all of which have come in conference.
Weiss has scored three or more goals in 10 of her last 18 games after totaling at least three in nine of the team's 17 games last year.
Senior Lisa Baker (Westminster/Winters Mill) finished with a game-high four points on two goals and two assists. The school's career leader in assists with 72, she now has 184 career points, two behind Heather Valunas for second on the school's all-time list, and 112 goals, two behind Laura Higgs for third.
Weiss and Baker combined for four points as the Mustangs built a 4-1 halftime lead and a 5-2 advantage with 22:00 remaining in the second half.
However, led by two points from Erin Shackelford, St. Mary's (0-1, 0-1 CAC) scored the next four consecutive goals, including two on free positions, to take its first lead of the game, 6-5 with 16:20 left.
Stevenson answered with back-to-back tallies to regain the lead, the last of which came on the first career tally for freshman Leah Warner (Pasadena/Northeast), but the Seahawks tied the game just 14 seconds following Warner's goal when Aubrey Mirkin scored her second with 8:01 to play to tie the game at 7-7.
Following the goal, freshman Alyssa Russell (Towson/Loch Raven) replaced junior Jenny Schroeder (Severna Park/Seton Keough) in goal and less than one minute into her first career appearance, made one of the game's biggest plays when she picked up her first career save on a free position by Cailey Aburn to keep the game tied.
After seven goals in a span of 11 minutes in the second half, neither team would find the back of the net for the next 14 until Weiss' game-winner with 6.4 seconds left in overtime.
Freshman Marissa Meiklejohn (Glen Burnie/Old Mill) added two goals for Stevenson while junior Laura Grammer (Parkville/Perry Hall) had four caused turnovers and four ground balls defensively. The transfer from CCBC Catonsville led a defense that held reigning CAC Rookie of the Year Lauriann Parker to just one point.
Schroeder finished with five saves for the Mustangs and Russell had three.
Shackelford had two goals and one assist to lead the Seahawks while Colleen Simpson had seven saves.
Stevenson returns to action next Sunday, February 27 when it hosts Washington and Lee at Caves Athletics Complex beginning at 1:00 p.m.
