Box Score ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - Stevenson women's basketball freshman Kayleigh Guzek (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) scored a career-high 16 points, including 12 in the second half, but turnovers proved to be the difference as St. Mary's (Md.) posted an 80-64 victory Saturday in a CAC contest at O'Brien ARC Arena.
Guzek was one of three players in double figures for Stevenson (4-4, 0-2 CAC) who committed 44 turnovers which led to 37 points for the Seahawks. Junior Sam Murray (Reisterstown/St. Paul's School for Girls) had 15 points while junior Rayshell Parker (Odenton/Meade) added 12 to go along with a game-high nine rebounds.
The Mustangs, who have lost three of their last four and their last five-straight conference contests, shot 52.4 percent from the floor in the first half, but trailed by six at the half, 33-27, after totaling 22 turnovers. St. Mary's was also 13-of-17 from the free throw line compared to 4-of-11 for Stevenson.
The Seahawks (2-5, 1-0 CAC), who snapped a four-game losing streak, opened the second half with an 18-2 run over the first six minutes to extend its lead to 22.
Murray totaled 11 of her 15 points in the second half where the Mustangs were 19-of-23 from three throw line and held a 23-15 edge in rebounds. However, the team totaled another 22 turnovers and were just 8-of-28 from the field for 28.6 percent.
Eight players had at least three turnovers for Stevenson who had 17 steals and a plus-13 rebounding margin.
Shana Lewis had 20 points to lead St. Mary's and was 10-of-13 from the free throw line while Raven Owens was 10-for-10 en route to 14 points.
The Mustangs return to action next Saturday, December 10 at CAC rival Salisbury. Game time is at 2:00 p.m.
