MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Stevenson men's basketball team led by 14 points with 3:13 remaining in the second half, but a 17-4 run by St. Mary's (Md.) forced overtime where the Seahawks outscored the Mustangs 15-7 en route to an 89-81 victory Saturday in a CAC contest at O'Brien ARC Arena.
Stevenson (2-5, 0-2 CAC) led the two-time defending CAC champions for all but 1:04 of the first half during regulation.
The trio of senior Greg Collins (Baltimore/Western Tech), junior Brett Burrier (Westminster/Winters Mill) and junior Jay Scroggins (Baltimore/Boys' Latin) combined for 59 of the Mustangs' 81 points, led by a season-high 22 from Collins, two shy of his career set versus Catholic on Dec. 30, 2009.
Meanwhile, Scroggins scored 17 points, tying a career-high set the same season at Southern Vermont on Nov. 15, 2009. For Burrier, it was his eighth game with at least 20 points in 27 games in a Stevenson uniform.
The Mustangs led 72-64 with 1:10 remaining in the second half, but missed four of six free throw attempts in the final 44 seconds while St. Mary's made its final four field goal attempts, including two from three-point range.
The Seahawks (5-2, 1-0 CAC) tied the game for the first time with 11 seconds to play after Chris Hutchinson scored on a fastbreak lay-up following a steal.
After a three-point play by Burrier tied the game at 81-81 with 1:45 left in overtime, St. Mary's closed the game with an 8-0 run, scoring six points from the free throw line. The Mustangs missed their final six attempts from the floor during that time and were just 2-for-11 in the extra period.
Stevenson finished the game with 11 three-pointers, including nine from Collins, Burrier and Scroggins. The team has now made at least one three-pointer in 114 consecutive games dating back to Feb. 13, 2007.
Devin Spencer led five Seahawks in double figures with 20 points. Christian Macauley had 14 points and nine rebounds while Jeff Haus had 13 points and eight rebounds.
The Mustangs return to action next Saturday, December 10 at CAC rival Salisbury. Game time is at 4:00 p.m.
