BALTIMORE, Md. - Stevenson field hockey
freshman Shelby Ballew
(Annapolis/Broadneck) scored two goals in her first
collegiate game to lead four different goal scorers as the Mustangs
opened their 2010 season with a 5-0 victory over the College of
Notre Dame (Md.) Thursday at Alumnae Field.
The victory was the first for Stevenson (1-0) in a season opener
since a 9-0 win over Hood on Aug. 30, 2003 in the Black-Eyed Susan
Tournament.
The Mustangs dominated the game, holding a 47-0 edge in shots
and a 13-0 margin in penalty corners, but led just 1-0 at halftime
after the team's leading scorer from a year ago, senior Katelyn
Manocheh (Timonium/Maryvale Prep), scored unassisted
with 21:51 remaining in the first half.
Manocheh starting the scoring in the second half with an assist
to sophomore Rachel Hill
(Parkton/Hereford) on her first career goal with just
under 20 minutes left before Ballew scored the first of
back-to-back goals just 3:33 later on a loose ball in front.
Ballew's second goal with 8:25 to play was exactly the same as
her first as she corralled the rebound off a shot by Manocheh and
slipped it past Gator keeper Emily Langton.
Junior Brittany Martin
(Hampstead/Hereford) added her first goal of the season
with just 49 seconds remaining to cap a four-goal second half for
the Mustangs who won their second-straight regular season road
game.
Already the school's career leader in saves and victories,
senior Kara Zimmerman
(Odenton/Arundel) picked up her 22nd career win in goal
before being relieved by her sister, sophomore Kelsi Zimmerman (Odenton/Arundel), who made her first appearance
after spending the 2009 season at Division II Limestone.
Stevenson hosts the eighth annual Black-Eyed Susan Tournament
this Saturday and Sunday at Caves Athletics Complex and will face
Delaware Valley in the tournament's first game Saturday morning at
