OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Lauriann Parker tied the
game on a penalty stroke with less than 10 minutes remaining in the
second half before scoring the game-winner just 47 seconds into the
second overtime to keep St. Mary's (Md.) undefeated as the Seahawks
escaped Stevenson with a 3-2 victory Wednesday night at Caves
Athletics Complex.
The Mustangs (4-3, 0-2 CAC) suffered their first loss in three
home games this season and dropped their first overtime game out of
the last three.
Meanwhile, St. Mary's won its second overtime decision this
season after defeating No. 15 Johns Hopkins on the road, 2-1 on
September 4.
The Seahawks entered the game fresh off their first-ever ranking
after being ranked at No. 20 in the latest womensfieldhockey.com
national poll Wednesday afternoon.
The CAC's leading scorer, Parker netted her third game-winning
goal in five games this season after tallying the winner versus
Hopkins and in the Seahawks' 3-2 victory over York (Pa.) in their
CAC opener on Saturday.
Stevenson found itself in front 2-0 less than five minutes into
the second half after quick strikes by sophomore Kaitlyn May
(Arnold/Archbishop Spalding) and junior Brittany Martin
(Hampstead/Hereford).
May's team-leading third goal of the season came just 1:19 into
the game off an assist from Martin while Martin's second tally came
on a feed from senior Katelyn Manocheh
(Timonium/Maryvale Prep) only 4:59 into the second
half.
Both goals were the results of penalty corners to give the
Mustangs a two-goal lead depsite being outshot 13-2 up to that
point.
St. Mary's would get on the board just 3:01 later when Ellen
Hackstaff scored off an assist from her sisterNatalie
Hackstaff to cut the Seahawk deficit in half, setting the stage for
Parker's heroics.
Stevenson senior Kara Zimmerman
(Odenton/Arundel) suffered the loss despite a strong
performance that saw her make nine saves, including eight in the
first half. Senior Natalie DiPaolo
(Baltimore/Perry Hall) also added three defensive saves
and has totaled 27 over her last three seasons.
Kristy Oppliger holds the school record for
defensive saves at 34.
The Mustangs begin a three-game stretch on Saturday
in which all three opponents are ranked in the top 10 of the
Kookaburra/NFHCA Division III National Coaches Poll when they host
No. 5 Lebanon Valley at 6:00 p.m.
