Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson women's volleyball freshman Avery Gabbard (Arnold/Broadneck) totaled 12 kills while freshman Jessica Gieselman (Westminster/Winters Mill) added nine service aces, eight digs and seven assists as the Mustangs swept Notre Dame (Md.) 25-14, 25-17, 25-11 in front of 1,034 raucous fans Wednesday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
The game was the first official game in the new Owings Mills Gymnasium and the crowd was the largest-ever to watch a women's volleyball game in the 16-year history of the the program at Stevenson.
Neither team performed well offensively as Stevenson (1-0) posted a .126 hitting percentage compared to minus-.083 for the Gators, but the Mustangs managed to take control of the game by totaling 18 services. In addition to Geiselman's nine, junior Alexa Carney (Towson/Towson) added five and and Gabbard had four.
With the third set tied at 1-1, Geiselman reeled off seven consecutive service aces as Stevenson built an eight-point advantage and never looked back en route to the 14-point game-clinching victory.
In the first set, Notre Dame (0-1) took advantage of two Mustang errors to take an 11-9 lead before Stevenson rallied by scoring the set's next 12 points, including behind the service of Carney who totaled four of her five service aces during the run.
The Gators were also hampered by 17 attack errors and nine service errors. Margee Maresca led the team with five kills while Catherine Subrizi had four. Maresca also added 11 digs.
Freshman Samantha Shetterly (Elkridge/Mount de Sales) led the Mustangs with 10 digs and junior Amy Rudolph (North East/Rising Sun) totaled 11 assists.
Stevenson travels to Harrisonburg, Virginia this weekend for the EMU Hampton Inn & Sleep Inn Invitational at Eastern Mennonite University. The Mustangs open with Mary Baldwin on Friday night at 6:00 p.m., before taking on CAC rival Mary Washington at 8:00 p.m.
