CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Stevenson softball team
won its seventh game out of the last nine, including
third-straight, and in the process, set a new school record for
wins in a season as the Mustangs swept a non-conference
doubleheader at Washington (Md.) Friday, winning game one 5-4
before taking game two, 8-0.
The previous record for wins in a season by Stevenson (21-14)
was 19 set by the 2007 team that finished 19-21. The Mustangs are
also assured of their first winning season in school history.
Also on Friday, junior Desirae
Sullivan (Severna Park/Severna Park) tied the school's
single-season record for RBIs in a season at 38, going 5-for-8 with
two RBIs and two doubles.
In game one, Stevenson and the Shorewomen matched each other run
for run as both teams scored three runs in the second and one in
third before the Mustangs scored the game-winner on an RBI
double by sophomore Lisa Bilski (Forest
Hill/Fallston) with two outs that scored sophomore
Caitlin Kwedar
(Hampstead/Delone).
All three of Stevenson's runs in the second were unearned as a
result of two Washington errors. Sophomore Brittani
Rynkowski (Hampstead/North Carroll) had a two-run
single after junior Kelly Dorsey
(Baltimore/Catonsville) reached on an error to score the
game's first run.
The Shorewomen (13-19) tied the game in the bottom of the second
with three runs on four hits before the Mustangs regained the lead
on Desirae Sullivan's RBI double and Washington tied it for the
second time on an RBI by Laura Wagoner.
Bilski and freshman Sara
DiMeglio (Spotswood, N.J./Spotswood) each finished
with two hits as all nine of the Mustang batters had at least one.
Junior Julianne Roper
(Baltimore/Western Tech) won her eighth game after
allowing four runs and scattering 10 hits while striking out five.
Desirae Sullivan went a perfect 4-for-4 with one RBI in game two
while Bilski was 3-for-4 with two RBIs as the Mustangs won their
sixth game by shutout this season, including their fifth in the
last 18 since April 1.
Junior Jessica Bandzwolek (Fallston/Fallston) drove
in three of the team's eight runs, highlighted by a two-run double
as part of three-run fourth. She leads the team with nine,
multi-RBI games this season.
Meanwhile, senior Sarah Moelter
(Timonium/Dulaney) extended her hitting streak to a
season-best five games with her first career home run, a solo shot
in the fourth to give Stevenson a 2-0 lead. She also earned her
team-leading 12th victory inside the circle and her fourth by
shutout after she surrendered just four hits.
The Mustangs return home to face Penn State Altoona on Senior
Day Sunday at Weinberg-Fine Stadium beginning at 1:00 p.m. The team
will honor Moelter and Stacey Rouse
(Catonsville/Mount de Sales) between games.
