SALISBURY, Md. - Stevenson women's lacrosse
senior Kristyna Hnizda
(Manchester/North Carroll) became the second player to
score her 100th career point this season as the 20th-ranked
Mustangs fell to No. 2 Salisbury Tuesday night at Sea Gull Stadium
in the semifinals of the CAC Women's Lacrosse Championship, 18-6.
The loss marked the third-straight year that Stevenson (10-6)
has lost at Salisbury in the semifinals of the conference
tournament.
Hnizda scored her 94th career goal less than three minutes into
the game and just 43 seconds after Beth Rhodey scored to give the
Sea Gulls a 1-0 lead.
However, Salisbury (16-1) scored the game's next five goals,
including three by Rhodey and two from Kid Cudmore who also had an
assist during the run, to take a commanding 6-1 advantage with
14:03 left in the first half.
Both teams exchanged goals over the final 10 minutes and the Sea
Gulls led 7-2 at halftime after holding a 20-10 margin in shots and
a 9-5 edge in ground balls.
The Mustangs tallied two of the first three goals to
start the second half on back-to-back scores by senior
Brittany
Connelly (Catonsville/Catonsville) and sophomore
Spencer
Kraus (Mt. Airy/South Carroll) to cut their deficit to
8-4, but that would be as close as they would get as Salisbury
scored 10 of the game's last 12 goals to advance to the
CAC championship game for the eighth consecutive year.
Kraus and junior Megan Weiss
(Odenton/Seton), who scored her 100th career point against
St. Mary's (Md.) on April 10, both finished with two points while
Hnizda, Connelly and senior Lauren Zegowitz
(Gaithersburg/Damascus) each had one.
Freshman Jenny Schroeder
(Severna Park/Severna Park) totaled eight saves and four
ground balls while Zegowitz and sophomore Lauren Taguding
(Baltimore/Towson) each had three caused turnovers.
Jessica Chmielewski had six points to lead the Sea Gulls while
Cudmore and Rhodey both finished with five.
Stevenson concludes the regular season next Thursday, April 29
at Elizabethtown.
