STEVENSON, Md. - Stevenson men's tennis
sophomore Ted Cooke (Snow Hill/Snow Hill) extended
his win streak to six at No. 1 singles, but Hood won two out of
three doubles matches en route to a 5-4 win over the Mustangs in
the first round of the CAC Men's Tennis Championship Sunday at the
Greenspring Tennis Courts.
Sunday's results were the exact opposite of when the two teams
met back on April 10 in which Stevenson (5-9) won two out of three
doubles en route to a 5-4 win on the road.
The Blazers (5-9) won at No. 1 and No. 2, edging out a two-point
decision at No. 1 as Mike Hardman and David Blowe edged Cooke and
junior Kevin Stamm (Leonardtown/Leonardtown), 8-6.
It was just the second time this season that Hardman and Blowe had
teammed together at No. 1.
At No. 2 doubles, Carter Reitman and Andrew Blowe earned their
first win in their first match of the season together, defeating
junior Ben Petasky (Baltimore/Pikesville) and
sophomore Shawn Kelley (Weltersbach, Germany/Ramstein
American), 8-3.
Hood sealed the win at No. 4 singles after Andrew Blowe defeated
Kelley, 6-3, 6-4.
In singles, Cooke won his seventh match of the season at No. 1
singles with a 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 over Reitman. Cooke posted a record
of 4-1 against CAC competition during the regular season with his
only loss coming to Henry Stuhler of No. 21 Salisbury on March
28.
Cooke had not lost a set in his previous five wins before
dropping the first one to Reitman.
Sophomore Shawn Hellman
(Marriottsville/Liberty) extended his winning streak to
three with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Kenny Smith at No. 6
singles.
Stevenson concludes its 2009-10 season with road matches at
Ursinus and Goucher. The Mustangs face Ursinus next Saturday
at 4:00 p.m.
