OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson women's lacrosse
junior Lisa Baker
(Westminster/Westminster) scored seven points to lead four
players who had at least three goals as the No. 19-ranked Mustangs
advanced to the semifinals of the CAC Women's Lacrosse Championship
with a 16-7 win over York (Pa.) Saturday at Caves Athletics
Complex.
The win was the 10th of the season for Stevenson (10-5), marking
the first time in the program's 16-year history that it has posted
three consecutive 10-win seasons. It also marks the third-straight
season that the team has advanced to the semifinals of the
conference tournament.
Baker finished with three goals and four assists while sophomore
Spencer
Kraus (Mt. Airy/South Carroll) totaled five points,
including four goals which tied her career-high.
Kraus scored three of the Mustangs' first five goals as they
opened a 6-1 lead with 11:57 remaining in the first half. With the
game tied at 1-1, she scored back-to-back goals just 58 seconds
apart to start a 5-0 run that gave the team its five-goal
margin.
Junior Megan Weiss
(Odenton/Seton) also finished the game with four goals
while senior Kristyna Hnizda
(Manchester/North Carroll) added three goals to increase
her career point total to 99.
Meanwhile, senior Lauren Zegowitz
(Gaithersburg/Damascus) had one goal with 20:14 left in
the second half and became the first player in school history to
reach 200 career points. It was also the 143rd goal of her career,
leaving her just eight shy of Heather Valunas' school record.
Kasie White's unassisted goal with 26:10 remaining pulled the
Spartans (10-6) within three at 8-5, but Stevenson scored eight of
the game's final 10 goals to cruise to even its all-time CAC
championship record to 3-3.
The Mustangs held a 38-21 advantage in shots, including a 20-6
margin in the second half, and won 16 out of 25 draw controls while
committing just 11 turnovers.
Leah Shultz led York with four goals. One of her goals came on a
free-position where the Spartans were just 2-of-7.
Stevenson sophomore Jenny Schroeder
(Serverna Park/Severna Park) finished with seven saves.
Kelsey Evans made 11 for York before being replaced by Tina Nicklas
for the final 12 minutes.
The Mustangs travel to top-seeded and No. 2-ranked Salisbury on
Tuesday. It will mark the third straight year that the two teams
have met in the semifinals. The Sea Gulls won 23-7 in 2008 and 19-8
in 2009, but Stevenson battled the seven-time CAC champions earlier
this season, trailing by just two with just under six minutes to go
before falling 14-10 at home on April 3.
