SALISBURY, Md. - The Stevenson softball team
trailed 4-0 after three innings to Mary Washington in the
quarterfinals of the CAC Softball Championship before scoring the
game's final six runs, including the game-winner on a single by
sophomore Caitlin Kwedar
(Hampstead/Delone) en route to a 6-4 victory Saturday at
Salisbury.
The win was the 18th of the season for the Mustangs (18-14),
leaving them one shy of the school record set in 2007, and their
second in three meetings with the Eagles this season.
However, Stevenson's quest for its first-ever CAC championship
appearance was cut short by York (Pa.) in the second game as
Brittany Therres homered for the fourth time and picked up her
third win in four games against the Mustangs this season in a 3-0
victory.
Two of Therres' four home runs have come against Stevenson as
she also homered and earned the victory in Wednesday's 5-3 first
round win.
Against Mary Washington (9-26-1), the Mustangs scored all six of
their runs over the final four innings while senior Sarah Moelter
(Timonium/Dulaney) and junior Julianne Roper
(Baltimore/Western Tech) held the Eagles scoreless after
they totaled four runs on seven hits over the first three.
The Mustangs got on the board in the fourth when junior
Desirae
Sullivan (Severna Park/Severna Park) led off the
inning with her fifth home run of the season and her 33rd RBI, only
five shy of the school's single-season record.
Stevenson tied the game with three runs in the fifth,
highlighted by a two-run single from freshman Carianne
Sullivan (Westminster/Westminster). Carianne then tied
the game a wild pitch with two outs.
Kwedar's two-out single in the sixth gave the Mustangs' their
first lead before an RBI single by Roper gave them some insurance
in the top of the seventh.
The Eagles threatened to tie the game with runners on second and
third with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Roper worked
her way out of the jam by retiring the next two batters, stranding
both runners in scoring position.
Carianne Sullivan finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs while Desirae
Sullivan was 2-for-3 and junior Jessica Bandzwolek
(Fallston/Fallston) went 2-for-4 to extend her hitting
streak to a season-high five games.
Roper scattered nine hits over two appearances and 7.2 innings
Saturday after limiting the Spartans (33-7) to just two earned runs
on seven hits in game two.
Stevenson has 10 more games before wrapping up the regular
season, six of which are at home, including Wedensday's
doubleheader with Penn State Berks at Weinberg-Fine Stadium
beginning at 3:30 p.m.
