YORK, Pa. - With the game tied at 2-2,
second-seeded York (Pa.) scored three runs in the bottom of the
fifth with the game-winning RBI coming on an RBI triple by Michelle
Barwick as the Spartans edged out a 5-3 victory over fifth-seeded
Stevenson Tuesday at Spartan Stadium in the first round of the CAC
Softball Championship.
The Mustangs (16-14) will now host an elimination game with
sixth-seeded Wesley on Thursday at Weinberg-Fine Stadium after the
Wolverines were handed an 11-0 defeat at top-seeded at No.
12-ranked Salisbury Tuesday.
Stevenson trailed 2-0 after a two-run homer by Brittany Therres
in the bottom of the second before tying the game with two runs of
its own in the top of the fourth.
Following back-to-back singles from freshman Carianne
Sullivan (Westminster/Westminster) and sophomore
Lisa
Bilski (Forest Hill/Fallston), junior Jessica
Bandzwolek (Fallston/Fallston) grounded out to score
Sullivan before an RBI single by freshman Liz Moul
(Hanover, Pa./South Western) with two outs scored Bilski
to tie the game at 2-2.
With the Spartans leading 5-2, the Mustangs had a chance to
rally in the top of the sixth after a lead-off single by Bilski and
a double by junior Desirae Sullivan (Severna Park/Severna
Park).
Bandzwolek drove in Bilski with a single to left before a
sacrifice bunt by Moul put runners on second and third with one
out.
However, Stevenson could not get any closer after Corrin Majczan
entered the game in relief of Therres and retired the first two
batters she faced by ground out to end the threat.
Majczan earned her third save while Therres picked up her 22nd
win against only three losses.
Bilski finished 2-for-4 to lead the Mustangs and Bandzwolek was
1-for-3 with two RBIs. Stevenson's top six hitters in the lineup
went a combined 7-for-18 with three RBIs while the final three
spots in the order were 1-for-8.
Junior Julianne Roper
(Baltimore/Western Tech) suffered just her fourth loss in
12 decisions this season, scattering nine hits over six innings and
striking out two.
Barwick and Brittany Schlorff each went 2-for-3 for the Spartans
(31-6).
