FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Stevenson women's
lacrosse sophomore Kelli Battista (Elkridge/Long
Reach) scored a career-high four points on two goals and
two assists, but the 19th-ranked Mustangs were held to their lowest
goal total of the season in falling to No. 20 Mary Washington
Saturday, 14-6 at the Battleground Athletic Complex.
The loss snapped a two-game win streak for Stevenson (8-3, 3-1
CAC) and was its first conference loss.
Meanwhile, Mary Washington remained unbeaten in CAC play and
increased its lead to three games over No. 1-ranked Salisbury who
travels to St. Mary's (Md.) on Sunday.
Catherine Kennedy and Brittany Butler combined for nine goals
and outscored the Mustangs by three as Kennedy totaled five goals
to go along with one assist for six points. Butler and Allie
Kimmelman each totaled four points as Kimmelman had one goal and
three assists.
Six of the Eagles' 14 goals came on free position shots as they
were 6-for-9, including 4-for-5 in the first half where they built
an 8-3 halftime lead.
Stevenson was just 1-of-9 on free position shots.
Battista, who had a hand in all three of Stevenson's first half
goals, scored off an assist from junior Lisa Baker
(Westminster/Westminster) just 2:22 into the game before
Mary Washington answered with five-straight, including two from
Kennedy and Butler, to take the lead for good.
In addition to allowing four free position goals in the first
half, the Mustangs were also just 6-of-13 on clears and had 13
turnovers.
Senior Lauren Zegowitz (Gaithersburg/Damascus),
who broke the school's career points record on Tuesday, finished
with one goal and one assist and now has 191 career points.
Sophomore Jenny Schroeder (Severna Park/Severna
Park) made 11 saves while counterpart Leigh Ann Redefer
stopped 15 shots.
Stevenson has the week off before returning to action next
Saturday, April 3 against No. 1-ranked Salisbury at home at 11:30
a.m. The game will be broadcast live on WBAL Plus, digital
