LYNCHBURG, Va. - The No. 2-ranked Stevenson
men's lacrosse team rallied from a 5-0 deficit and kept its 24-game
regular-season unbeaten streak alive with five consecutive goals to
start the fourth quarter en route to a 12-9 road victory over No.
18 Lynchburg Saturday night at Shellenberger Field.
The win was the second-straight for the Mustangs (7-0) against
the Hornets and their first in three meetings in Lynchburg.
The difference for Stevenson came in the second and fourth
quarters where they outscored the Hornets 12-6, including 7-4 in
the fourth.
Trailing 7-5 after three, senior Steve Kazimer
(Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger), the 2009 Attackman of the Year
and 2010 Tewaarton Trophy candidate, totaled two goals and three
assists as the team scored five-straight goals to take
its first lead, 10-7 with 5:04 remaining.
Kazimer had a hand in seven of Stevenson's 12 goals,
totaling four goals and three assists.
After scoring unassisted at 10:35 to start the fourth quarter,
Kazimer assisted junior Jimmy Dailey (Westminster/Winters
Mill) to tie the game with 8:59 left which started a
stretch in which the Mustangs scored three goals in a span of just
54 seconds.
Kazimer netted his fourth off a feed from Dailey to give
Stevenson the lead for good at 8:17 before he found junior
Richie Ford (Baltimore/Towson) just 12 seconds
later to push the lead to three.
Kazimer then assisted on the game-winner by junior Kyle
Moffitt (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) with 5:04
remaining.
Lynchburg (4-3) took a five-goal lead after holding the Mustangs
scoreless for the game's first 24 minutes. The last time Stevenson
was held scoreless in a quarter was 12 games ago on Apr. 19, 2009
when it lost to Salisbury in the CAC championship game.
However, Moffitt scored at the 6:20 mark of the second quarter
that also started a stretch of five answered goals, the last
of which came with just six seconds remaining when junior
Neal Bartheleme (Towson/Dulaney) scored on a feed
from Ford to tie the game at 5-5 at halftime.
Ford finished with three goals and one assist and now has 120
career goals in three seasons at Stevenson, two shy of Eric
Schmith's school record.
Senior Geoff Hebert (Lutherville/Dulaney) made
14 saves, one shy of his career-high, while picking up a
career-high 10 ground balls.
Junior Ray Witte (Annapolis/St. Peter and Paul)
won 16-of-25 face-offs and has won 37-of-55 for a .673 winning
percentage the last two games after he totaled the second-most wins
in school history with 21 versus No. 15 Stevens on Wednesday.
Pat Ohrem and Dylan Hoff each had two goals and one assist for
the Hornets while Franc Cook had 11 saves.
Stevenson opens CAC play at Mary Washington on Wednesday
beginning at 4:00 p.m.
