MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Stevenson softball
team opened its spring break trip to Myrtle Beach by splitting its
two games on the first day, allowing four runs in the sixth of an
11-6 loss to Arcadia before scoring five runs in the sixth to cap a
7-4 victory over Norwich Monday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring
Classic.
In game one, the Mustangs (2-1) rallied from a
three-run deficit to pull within one on three separate ocassions,
including a 7-6 deficit after five, but Arcadia scored four runs in
the bottom of the sixth to seal its first victory of the season.
The Mustangs trailed 3-0 after allowing three runs in the bottom
of the first, but rallied with two in the top of the second on a
two-run double to right by freshman Carianne Sullivan
(Westminster/Westminster).
The Knights (1-4) pushed the lead back to three with two
unearned runs on two Stevenson errors in the bottom of the second
before the Mustangs pulled back within one, 5-4 on RBIs by junior
Desirae Sullivan (Severna Park/Severna
Park) and senior Sarah Moelter
(Timonium/Dulaney) in the third.
However, a two-run single by Amy Johnson gave Arcadia its third,
third-run advantage in the bottom of the third, 7-4.
An RBI single by sophomore Lisa Bilski (Forest
Hill/Fallston) in the fourth and an RBI double by freshman
Sara DiMeglio (Sportswood, N.J./Spotswood) pulled
Stevenson back within one, 7-6 going into the bottom of the sixth
where the Knights scored four unearned runs to take an 11-6 lead.
The Mustangs totaled three of their five errors in the inning,
including two in the first three batters that would have ended the
inning with no runs allowed.
Junior Julianne Roper (Baltimore/Western
Tech) scattered eight hits and struck our six over six
innings and allowed just five earned runs.
Bilski went 2-for-4 with one RBI while Carianne Sullivan was
1-for-2 with two RBIs.
Stevenson scored five runs in its last at-bat in the bottom of
the sixth of game two, highlighted by a two-run triple by senior
Stacey Rouse (Catonsville/Mount de Sales) as the
team rallied from a 4-1 deficit.
Rouse finished the game 1-for-4 with two RBIs in the leadoff
spot as the Mustangs' top four hitters combined for seven of the
team's nine hits and went 7-for-15 with four RBIs and four
extra-base hits.
Stevenson took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when junior
Jessica Bandzwolek (Fallston/Fallston) reached on
a two-out error that scored junior Brittani Rynkowski
(Hampstead/North Carroll).
The lead stood until the top of the fourth when the Cadets (1-0)
scored four runs, including two on a bases loaded walk and a ground
out.
Bilski scored a run on a passed ball in the fifth to pull
the Mustangs within two before they scored five, unearned runs
in the sixth for the victory.
Moelter earned her first win of the season after allowing just
three hits, but walking five. Bilski finished 3-for-4 and Desirae
Sullivan went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Stevenson has two games on Tuesday versus Baptist Bible and
Philadelphia Biblical beginning at 9:30 a.m.
