STEVENSON, Md. - Stevenson men's volleyball
senior David Lloyd (Germantown/Seneca Valley)
totaled a career-high 20 kills while sophomore Dean
Massimini (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township)
had 53 assists as the Mustangs hang tough with Hunter before
falling 30-26, 30-28, 28-30, 30-27 Friday night at Student Union
Gymnasium.
The Hawks (18-8) entered the game having won nine of
their last 11 with their only two losses coming to Baruch who leads
the team by two games in the NECVA CUNYAC Division and is ranked
No. 1 in the latest NECVA Top 10 Poll.
Hunter's Christopher Newcomb had 21 kills to lead four players
with at least 11. He also posted a double double with 10 digs while
posting a .400 hitting percentage. Eric Barty added 19 kills and
Braien Otsla and John Gemegah had 14 and 11, respectively.
Lloyd finished with a .415 hitting percentage and best his
previous career-high of 18 set in a 3-2 win over CCNY on Mar. 15,
2008 when he also added a career-high 21 digs. Earlier this season,
he totaled 17 kills and 19 digs, both season-highs, in a 3-1 win at
home against Lancaster Bible on January 23.
Lloyd also led the team with nine digs, sharing the top
honor with freshman Kyle Diller
(Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg).
The game featured 29 ties and 12 lead changes, including 11 and
four in the second set where the Mustangs led 26-22 before the
Hawks scored eight of the final 10 points to edge out a 30-28
victory.
Stevenson held a five-point advantage in the third set 20-15
before Hunter rallied to within two, 26-24. However, led by two
kills from sophomore Jason Matkowski (Warminster,
Pa./William Tennent), one from Lloyd and an ace from
Massimini, the Mustangs pulled out the two-point victory, 30-28.
The fourth set featured eight ties and four lead changes with
the last tie coming at 19-19 before the Hawks rolled off five
consecutive points to take a 24-19 advantage en route to the 30-27
clinching victory.
Massimini's 53 assists were seven shy of his career-high set in
a 3-2 victory over New Jersey City on Apr. 11, 2009.
Freshman Christian Woznicki (Aliquippa,
Pa./Hopewell) tied a career-high with 12 kills while
Matkowski finished with 10. Freshman Robert Kryger
(Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) hit .562 with nine
kills.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday with two matches against
Pfeiffer and Medaille beginning at 10:00 a.m.
