YORK, Pa. - Stevenson women's lacrosse junior
Lisa Baker (Westminster/Westminster) and senior
Lauren Zegowitz (Gaithersburg/Damascus) combined
to score five of the Mustangs' final six goals as they rallied from
a two-goal deficit with less than 15 minutes left en route to a
14-11 victory over York (Pa.) Wednesday at Kinsley Field.
The win marked the 100th in the career of fifth-year head coach
Kathy Railey who is now 100-70 in 11 collegiate
seasons and 36-31 at Stevenson. As of 2009, she was ranked as the
25th winningest active coach in Division III with
a .583 percentage.
Stevenson's two leading scorers last season with 90 combined
goals, Baker and Zegowitz were held to just one point each before
erupting for five-straight goals in a span of 4:58.
With the Mustangs trailing 10-8, Zegowitz netted her second goal
of the game with 11:50 remaining before Baker picked up her first
just 45 seconds later to tie the game.
The duo would score back-to-back again only 43 seconds apart
when Zegowitz tallied her second hat trick in as many games this
season and the 23rd of her career at 8:46 to give Stevenson an
11-10 advantage, marking the seventh lead change of the game.
Baker posted her second consecutive hat trick as well with
back-to-back goals at 8:03 and 6:52 to give the Mustangs the
largest lead of the game for either team at 13-10.
Stevenson scored six of the game's final seven goals to post
their fourth-straight regular season road win.
The Mustangs also used a late run in the first half, scoring
three of the final four goals, to rally from a 4-2 deficit and tie
the game at 5-5 at halftime.
Like Baker and Zegowitz, junior Megan Weiss
(Odenton/Seton) had three goals and one assist as well.
The trio has combined for 19 of the team's 30 goals through two
games.
Sophomores Kelli Battista (Elkridge/Long Reach)
and Kirstin Gancarz (Crownsville/Old Mill) each
scored twice while senior Kristyna Hnizda (Manchester/North
Carroll) picked up her third goal of the season with 41
seconds remaining in the first half to tie the game at 5-5.
Sophomore Jenny Schroeder (Severna Park/Seton
Keough) made six saves in goal for the Mustangs while
counterpart Kelsey Evans had seven for York.
Reigning CAC Player of the Week, Kimberly Wayson, had four goals
and six points to lead the Spartans (1-1, 0-1 CAC) who dropped
their second-straight to Stevenson.
The Mustangs return to action on Saturday when they host a
non-conference contest with Ursinus at Towson University's Unitas
