STEVENSON, Pa. - After falling behind 2-0 to
No. 6 Philadelphia Biblical, the Stevenson men's volleyball team
rallied in the third set and led by as many as seven before a 14-7
run by the Crimson Eagles gave them a 30-16, 30-19, 35-33 victory
over the Mustangs Monday at Student Union Gymnasium.
Stevenson (7-4, 2-3 NECVA West) led 23-16 in the third set and
then 28-24, but the team could not overcome five attack errors and
two service errors combined with eight kills from Philadelphia
Biblical's Justin Brubaker.
Brubaker totaled 14 of his game-high 25 kills in the third set,
including back-to-back spikes with the set tied at 33-33. He also
had 14 digs.
As a team, the Crimson Eagles (12-3, 4-0 NECVA West), totaled 51
kills and 46 digs while posting a .227 hitting percentage compared
to a .400 percentage in the last meeting between the two teams on
February 4.
Sophomore Jason Matkowski (Warminster, Pa./William
Tennent) had 12 kills to lead the Mustangs. Freshman
Kyle Diller (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg)
finished with five kills, six digs and 13 assists while sophomore
Dean Massimini (Washington Township, N.J./Washington
Township) also had six digs and 13 assists.
Freshman Christian Woznicki (Aliquippa,
Pa./Hopewell) posted a team-high eight digs.
However, Stevenson was limited by mistakes, especially in a
thrilling third set which featured 11 ties and four lead
changes. The Mustangs totaled 12 of their 30 attack errors in the
third along with three service errors which prevented them from
taking advantage of Philadelphia Biblical's 13 attack and six
service errors.
All totaled, Stevenson finished the game with an equal
amount of attack errors and kills while committing another seven
errors in service.
Senior David Lloyd (Germantown/Seneca Valley)
had five kills, five digs and five blocks, but also committed nine
attack errors and three service errors.
Stevenson will look to snap its four-game losing streak on
Wednesday when they travel to perennial contender Eastern
Mennonite. Game time is at 7:00 p.m. The Royals defeated the
Mustangs, 3-0 last Tuesday.
