Box Score CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Stevenson men's basketball senior Greg Woody (Baltimore/Mount St. Joseph) scored the game-winning basket on a lay-up with just 17 seconds left as the Mustangs snapped an eight-game road losing streak with a 74-72 victory over Washington (Md.) Wednesday in the first round of the Pride of Maryland Championship at the Cain Athletic Center.
The win was also the first for Stevenson (1-1) since a 70-63 victory over Gallaudet on Jan. 27, 2010, ending a seven-game skid overall.
Woody finished with 17 points, eight assists and four steals to lead three Mustangs in double figures. His game-winning basket came off a steal to break a 72-72 tie after the Shoremen (0-2) had called timeout with 37 seconds remaining to set-up for the go-ahead score.
Sophomore Danny Murphy (Severn/Glen Burnie) had 16 points, seven rebounds and three blocks while sophomore Brett Burrier (Westminster/Winters Mill) added 13 points and nine rebounds.
The Mustangs led by as many as 15 in the first half and shot 50.9 percent from the floor to help overcome 22 turnovers. They led 25-10 with 7:29 left in the opening half, but Washington outscored the Mustangs 24-11 the rest of the way to pull within two at halftime, 36-34.
The Shoremen rallied from a nine-point second half deficit and tied the game three times before taking their first lead on a jumper by Sal Schittino with 9:28 remaining.
Stevenson advances to the semifinals of the Pride of Maryland Championship where it will host CAC rival Frostburg State Friday at 6:30 p.m., at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
In other tournament action at Stevenson on Friday, McDaniel will face Washington at 2:00 p.m., followed by Goucher versus Johns Hopkins at 4:15 p.m. Hood and St. Mary's (Md.) will then meet in a rematch of last year's Pride of Maryland title game at 8:30 p.m.
