SALEM, Va. - Stevenson field hockey freshman
Leigh Willing (Princess Anne/Holly Grove
Christian) scored her first career goal less than four
minutes into overtime to lift the Mustangs to their second
consecutive victory, 3-2 over Roanoke in a non-conference contest
Saturday at Kerr Stadium.
The win was the second for Stevenson (6-6) in its last three
overtime games and first this season. The team has been involved in
eight overtime contests since 2008, totaling a 5-3 record.
The Mustangs led on two different occasions in Saturday's game,
but the Maroons (1-7) battled back to tie it each time.
Sophomore Kaitlyn May
(Arnold/Archbishop Spalding) picked up her fourth goal of
the season with under nine minutes to play in the first half to
open the scoring before Roanoke's Helen Pearsall responded with her
team-leading third goal of the season only four minutes later to
tie the game at 1-1 going into halftime.
Freshman Johanna Morrison
(McLean, Va./McLean) scored her career first goal 18
minutes into the second half to put Stevenson back on top, but
Megan Hagberg answered with her first career goal with just over
seven minutes left to tie the game for the second time, 2-2.
Stevenson held a 10-5 advantage in shots and an 11-7 margin in
penalty corners and got three saves from senior Kara Zimmerman
(Odenton/Arundel) to earn its third road win of 2010.
The Mustangs wrap-up its three-game road trip on Thursday with a
4:00 p.m., contest at local rival McDaniel.
