STEVENSON, Md. - Stevenson men's volleyball
sophomore Jason Matkowski (Warminster, Pa./William
Tennent) totaled 31 kills while senior David Lloyd
(Germantown/Seneca Valley) added 26 as the Mustangs opened
the 2010 season with wins over the City College of New York and
Lancaster Bible Saturday at Student Union Gymnasium.
Stevenson (2-0, 1-0 NECVA West) opened the day with a 30-24,
30-19, 30-25 victory over CCNY before posting a 30-22, 30-21,
22-30, 30-21 win over Lancaster Bible in its NECVA West opener.
The Mustangs also opened the 2009 season with back-to-back wins
over CCNY and Lancaster Bible.
Combined with last year's school record 20-win season, Stevenson
has won 20 of their last 31 regular season games and 22 of 35
overall after advancing to the title game of the ECAC South Region
Championship a year ago.
Matkowski and Lloyd combined for 35 of the Mustangs' 58 kills in
the win over Lancaster Bible (1-2, 0-2 NECVA West), highlighted by
Lloyd's career-high 17. His previous best was 16 set in a five-set
win over Medaille on March 1, 2009. Lloyd also added a 19 digs, two
shy of his all-time best, for his seventh career double double.
Matkowski totaled 18 kills, four shy of his career-high set
versus Baruch on Jan. 30, 2009 in just his third collegiate match.
Stevenson led the nation in digs last season and totaled 59
against the Chargers with three players totaling 10 or more. In
addition to Lloyd, freshman Kyle Diller (Chambersburg,
Pa./Chambersburg) added 11 and freshman Trevor
Redell (Street/John Carroll) had 10.
The Mustangs also committed just 21 errors in 140 attempts for a
.264 hitting percentage. Sophomore Caleb Duff (Belle Glade,
Fla./Belle Glade) and freshman Robert Kryger
(Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) each had eight kills while
sophomore Dean Massimini (Washington Township,
N.J./Washington Township) totaled 35 assists.
Matkowski had 13 kills in the win over CCNY (0-2) and Lloyd
finished with nine. Lloyd also had nine digs while Massimini added
eight digs and 29 assists and Duff had six kills and a .455 hitting
percentage.
The games were the only ones at home for Stevenson until
February as the team begins a seven-game road trip on Monday with a
rematch at Lancaster Bible. Game time is at 7:00 p.m.
