STEVENSON, Md. - The Stevenson men's basketball
team led No. 11 Amherst by six midway through the first half, but a
14-3 run by the Lord Jeffs, capped by a three-pointer by Steve
Wheeler gave the 2007 national champions a lead they would not
relinquish en route to a 69-55 win Saturday at Student Union
Gymnasium.
Amherst (7-1), who is ranked 14th in the nation in scoring
offense at 86.7 points per game, was held to its lowest total of
the season.
Stevenson also limited the Lord Jeffs to a 36.8 percent field
goal percentage after they entered the game shooting 51.2 percent,
including over 35 percent from three-point range. Amherst finished
8-of-28 from beyond the arc for 28.6 percent.
Led by six points and four rebounds from freshman center
Andrew Bishop (Lothian/Southern), the Mustangs
(1-10) opened the game on an 11-5 run in the first 11:57 while
holding the Lord Jeffs to just 2-of-13 shooting.
However, a 14-3 run gave the Lord Jeffs a 19-14 advantage with
3:14 left in the opening half before they held a 28-24 halftime
lead.
Wheeler scored 10 of his game-high 21 points in the opening half
while Taylor Barrise added eight. Barrise finished with 11 points
as he and Wheeler were two of three players in double figures for
Amherst. Jeff Holmes had 17 points, including 15 in a decisive
second half that saw the Lord Jeffs outscore Stevenson 41-32 and
stretch its lead to as many as 22.
Junior guard Greg Collins (Baltimore/Western
Tech) had 17 points to lead the Mustangs while Bishop
finished with eight points and five rebounds. Senior guard
Irvin Jones (Landover/Riverdale Baptist) and
junior guard Andy Shelly (York, Pa./West York)
also added eight points each.
Stevenson continues its five-game homestand on Wednesday when it
hosts a CAC contest against Mary Washington beginning at 7:00 p.m.
