HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - Senior
Brooks Kyker (Westminster/Westminster) scored his
fifth career goal and second this season to lead Stevenson to a 1-0
victory over Hampden-Sydney Sunday afternoon at Miller Field in the
Hampden-Sydney Classic.
The win was the third-straight on the road for the Mustangs
(2-1) dating back to last season. It was also the first loss for
the Tigers who beat Stevenson on the road a year
ago, 3-1 on Sept. 15, 2008.
In that game, the two teams combined for eight yellow cards
and 37 fouls. On Sunday, they totaled five yellows and 27 fouls.
In the first 20 minutes, both teams had totaled eight fouls and
only four shots, three of which came from Stevenson before Kyker
found the net in the 21st minute.
There were not a lot of opportunities for either team in the
game as both defenses limited the number of shots. Hampden-Sydney
finished with a slim 12-11 edge, only four of which were on goal
compared to three for the Mustangs.
Sophomore Ryan Flannelly (Middlesex,
N.J./Middlesex) earned his first career shutout in seven
starts, totaling four saves en route to his second win. Last year,
he allowed eight goals in eight games while making eight saves and
posting a .500 saves percentage.
This season, Flannelly has stopped 14 shots for an .824
percentage and has surrendered just three goals in three games.
Following Flannelly's last save in the 69th minute, the
Stevenson defense did not allow another shot over the final 21
minutes.
John Robert Plyler suffered his first loss for the Tigers (2-1)
while making two saves.
Stevenson will now look to avenge a second home loss from last
season when it travels to Washington (Md.) on Thursday. Last year,
the Shoremen scored with just 51 seconds remaining to steal a 2-1
victory in the season opener for both teams on Aug. 29, 2008.
Washington is 1-1 this season and will play host to Arcadia on
Tuesday.
