GRANVILLE, Ohio - Stevenson University men's
lacrosse junior Geoff Hebert
(Lutherville/Dulaney) tied his career-high
with 12 saves as the No. 4-ranked Mustangs snapped No. 11
Denison's 11-game winning streak with a 12-9 loss Saturday
afternoon at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
Stevenson (15-1) finishes the regular season with a school
record 15 wins and anticipates its first ever appearance in the
NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship when the selections
for the 22-team field are announced on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the loss also snapped a 16-game home winning streak
for the Big Red (12-2) that dated back to an 8-5 loss to Widener on
May 9, 2007 in the first round of the NCAA championship.
Junior Steve Kazimer (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger)
totaled a season-high six points for the Mustangs, one shy of his
career-high, as he finished with three goals and three assists.
Sophomore Jimmy Dailey (Westminster/Winter
Mills) had two goals and two assists while senior
Chris Baldwin (Baltimore/Calvert Hall) had a goal
and three assists. Junior Nic Bevacqua (Boonton Township,
N.J./Mountain Lakes) finished with two goals and one
assist.
Stevenson scored seven of the game's first nine goals to take a
7-2 halftime lead, led by two goals and two assists from Kazimer.
Hebert finished the first half with seven saves.
Led by two goals and one assist from Dan
Maude, Denison cut the deficit to two following
Maude's third goal with 12:57 remaining in the fourth quarter.
He finished the game with four points while Brady Burton added four
goals.
Junior Richie Ford (Baltimore/Towson) scored
just 34 seconds later to push the lead to three before Burton
scored on the extra-man advantage only 36 seconds later to cut
the lead to 10-8.
However, Bevacqua and Kazimer would score back-to-back goals
over the next three minutes to increase the lead to four while the
Stevenson defense, led by two saves from Hebert, held the Big Red
scoreless until Burton scored his third man-up goal of the game
with just 49 seconds remaining.
Denison attempted its comeback by outshooting the Mustangs 12-4
in the fourth and holding an 11-6 edge in ground balls. Its also
scored two of its three goals with the extra-man advantage.
