SALISBURY, Md. - Krista Zerby's two-out,
RBI-single in the bottom of the ninth was her only hit of the game
and the only run of the game, but is gave Hood a 1-0 victory over
the Stevenson University softball team Saturday afternoon in the
second round of the CAC Softball Championship at Salisbury's Sea
Gull Field.
The win sends the Blazers (11-22) to the semifinals at 4:00
p.m., where they will play York (Pa.) after the Spartans handed
Wesley a 7-1 loss in Saturday's first game.
Three of Hood's 11 wins this season have come against Stevenson
after the team swept a doubleheader with Mustangs at home on April
5.
For the second-straight game, Stevenson (13-19) was held
scoreless after stranding 13 runners on base and going 1-for-13
with runners in scoring position. In their first round loss at York
(Pa.) on Thursday, the Mustangs left nine runners on base and were
0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
The Blazers' Jamie Gardner scattered seven hits over 8.2
innings while striking out eight before giving way to Bridgette
Ringley who faced just two batters and picked up her sixth win
in 27 appearances this season.
Katherine Law scored the game-winning run after she
and Stephanie Gardner hit back-to-back singles with one out in
the bottom of the ninth. Both advanced into scoring position
on a ground out to second by Jennifer Willison before Zerby's
walkoff single to left center.
Zerby finished the game 1-for-4 with one RBI while Law was
2-for-4 with a run.
Hood managed just seven hits against Stevenson junior
Sarah Moelter (Timonium/Dulaney) who went 8.2
innings, struck out three and walked only one. She also led the
Mustangs offensively, going 2-for-3 with a sacrifice.
Sophomore Jessica Bandzwolek
(Fallston/Fallston) also had two hits, including a double.
Three of Stevenson's seven hits went for extra bases as junior
Stacey Rouse (Catonsville/Mount de Sales) and
sophomore Laura Bedgar (Glen Rock,
Pa./Susquehannock) also had doubles.
The Mustangs return to action on Tuesday with a non-conference
doubleheader at Franklin & Marshall. First pitch is at 4:00
p.m.
