YORK, Pa. - Brittany Therres allowed just six
hits and two walks while striking out three to earn her
seventh shutout and 12th victory of the season as third-seeded York
(Pa.) beat sixth-seeded Stevenson with a 6-0 victory in the
first round of the CAC Softball Championship Thursday at Spartan
Stadium.
The Mustangs (13-18) must now face Wesley on Saturday in an
elimination game at Salisbury. First pitch will be at noon.
At the plate, Therres helped her own cause with a two-out,
two-run single up the middle in the bottom of the first to give the
Spartans (25-10) a 2-0 lead. They added three more in the second.
Therres finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Kelly Smith went
3-for-4 and Heather Bormann was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
Meanwhile, the Mutangs (13-18) left nine runners on base and
were 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
Stevenson looked primed to score the contest's first run in the
top of the first after junior Stacey Rouse
(Catonsville/Mount de Sales) led off
the game with a double to left center. After she
was sacrificed to third by freshman Brittani Rynkowski
(Hampstead/North Carroll), Therres retired the next two
batters she faced via pop up and strike out to end the threat.
Four of the Mustangs' six hits came from the lead off
batter, but the team managed to advance just three base runners out
of 10 past second base.
Sophomore Julianne Roper (Baltimore/Western
Tech) scattered 10 hits over her six innings while walking
only one, but suffered her ninth loss in 16 starts this season
after surrendering six earned runs.
