STEVENSON, Md. - The Stevenson University men's
volleyball team totaled 41 attack errors, 21 service errors and 13
receptions errors in dropping back-to-back matches to Division II
Lees-McRae and No. 9-ranked Philadelphia Biblical Saturday at
Carolyn Manuzsak Student Union Gymnasium.
The Mustangs (13-8, 3-4 NECVA West) lost a spirited match
against Lees-McRae 30-19, 30-26, 19-30, 30-16 before being
overpowered by Philadelphia Biblical for the second time this
season, 30-21, 30-25, 30-21.
After dropping the first game against Lees-McRae, Stevenson
rallied from a 7-3 deficit to tie the second game at 19-19. The two
teams would trade points with the score tied for the eighth time,
24-24.
Behind five kills and one Mustang error, the Bobcats (11-2)
scored six of the final eight points to edge out the
four-point win despite committing 11 attack errors.
Stevenson would ride its momentum into the third
game, exploding for 17 kills and a .414 hitting
percentage while posting three blocks and taking advantage of
Lees-McRae's .083 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Jason Matkowski (Warminster, Pa./William
Tennent) totaled five of his team-high 13 kills in the
third game while junior David Lloyd (Germantown/Seneca
Valley) added three of his 11.
Despite their strong play in games two and three, game four was
a complete let down for the Mustangs in the fourth and deciding
game as they totaled just five kills and a minus-.129 hitting
percentage in losing by 14.
The Bobcats, who picked up their 10th-straight win, jumped out
to a 10-4 lead and expanded it to 20-9 before scoring 10 of
the game's final 16 points to close out the match.
Lloyd also added five total blocks while senior Ryan
McDowell (Germantown/Seneca Valley) added eight kills and
four total blocks. Freshman Josh Forbes (Erie,
Pa./McDowell) also had four blocks to go along
with five kills in three games off the bench.
Freshman Dean Massimini (Washington Township,
N.J./Washington Township) totaled 27 assists and a
team-high nine digs, but had four of the team's 14
service errors.
Against Philadelphia Biblical (14-5, 5-1 NECVA
West), the Mustangs had four players with at least six
kills, led by 13 from senior J.R. Jackson (Havre de
Grace/Havre de Grace), but were often defenseless against
the strong attack of the Crimson Eagles who totaled 59 kills and a
.393 hitting percentage.
Justin Brubaker totaled 22 kills for PBU and Leandro Dueck added
16.
The Mustangs also committed seven service errors and
five blocking errors.
Senior Steve Grossnickle (Perry Hall/Calvert
Hall) had five kills and 10 digs for
Stevenson and Matkowski added nine and five, respectively.
Massimini and Lloyd each finished with six kills while Massimini
added 34 assists.
Stevenson hosts SUNY IT on Sunday beginning at 3:00 p.m. The
Mustangs beat the Wildcats on the road last Sunday, 23-30, 30-20,
30-23, 30-20.
