OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Sophomore Jessica
Bandzwolek (Fallston/Fallston) went 3-for-6 with a double,
home run and two RBIs, but York (Pa.) scored a run in the top of
the seventh of game one and took a 5-0 lead in game two en route to
3-2 and 5-1 victories over the Stevenson University softball team
Sunday at Weinberg-Fine Stadium.
The Spartans (16-6, 2-0 CAC) had lost three of their last four
and fell out of the NFCA Division III Top 25 Poll this week after
being ranked as No. 21 on March 11 after starting the season 11-3.
Meanwhile, Stevenson falls back to .500 after having lost
three-straight since winning six consecutive.
After an RBI double by Kristen Gray in the top of the first of
game one gave York a 1-0 lead, the Mustangs tied it in the bottom
of the inning on Bandzwolek's solo home run.
It was the second home run in as many days for Bandzwolek after
her two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth gave Stevenson a
5-3 win over Washington (Md.) on Saturday.
The Spartans regained the lead in the second on an RBI single by
Meghan Van Meter, but Stevenson responded in the bottom of the
third when Bandzwolek drove in her second run with a two-out RBI
single that scored sophomore Laura Bedgar (Glen Rock,
Pa./Susquehannock).
That is where the game would stand, tied at 2-2, until the top
of the seventh when Koehl led off the inning with her team-leading
fifth home run of the season, to give the Spartans a one-run lead.
That would be all Brittany Therres would need as she induced
three infield outs from the first three Mustang hitters in the
bottom of the inning to preserve the win for York in its conference
opener.
Koehl and Therres each went 2-for-4 while Koehl
added a run and an RBI.
Bandzwolek was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and was one of just three
players for get a hit for Stevenson as Bedgar and freshman
Lisa Bilski (Forest Hill/Fallston) each were
1-for-3.
In the second game, the Spartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the
first and a 5-0 advantage after four on a three-run homer by Van
Meter. Koehl and Julie Norris each had RBI singles in the first.
The Mustangs' lone run came in the bottom of the seventh after a
single by Bilski and a double by sophomore Michelle January
(Baltimore/Eastern Tech). During the next at bat, Bilski
scored and January advanced to third with one out on a passed ball.
However, Stevenson could not sustain the rally as Koehl recorded
the final two outs on a strikeout and a pop-up.
Koehl allowed just four hits and an unearned run while striking
out seven. She and Therres combined
to surrender only nine hits over 14 innings and
strike out 14.
Four different Mustangs each had a hit in the game as Bilski,
January, junior Stacey Rouse (Catonsville/Mount de
Sales) and freshman Mara DeLaus (Webster,
N.Y./Webster-Schroeder) all went 1-for-3.
Junior Sarah Moelter (Timonium/Dulaney) took
the loss in game two while sophomore Julianne Roper
(Baltimore/Western Tech) fell in the first despite
scattering nine hits over seven innings and totaled four strikeouts
and four scoreless innings.
Stevenson hosts the College of Notre Dame (Md.) on Tuesday.
First pitch is at 2:30 p.m.
